udge of the Court of Session, Lord of judiciarv, one time Lord Advocate Depute, and former Solicitor General of Scotland.

Cockburn was never a Writer to the Signet. In 1880 he entered the Faculty of Advocates. A Whig, he was appointed by his Tory relatives to the political office of Lord Advocate Depute, only to be dismissed four years later. The Whigs in the Earl Grey Administration made him Solicitor General for Scotland, but he continued to be known by one and aU as "Cocky." He was appointed to be a judge of the Court of Session, trying civil cases, and later as Lord of judlciary, trying criminal cases. Archibald Davidson, David's elder brother, was one of the trustees of Cockburn's estate.
