J. Khartolgoi

A farmer and a member of the “Erdeneshoo” Water Users’ Group, Buyant soum, Khovd aimag

“I have a 1.2 ha field and grow vegetables, potatoes, cabbages, carrots, onions and other crops. We harvest at least 33-35 tonnes of potatoes and sell them from the field at wholesale prices to the retail sellers. We keep only seed potatoes. Because we don’t have livestock, we make our living solely from the vegetables we grow, so our land is our value. From the profits we make from the sales of the vegetables, we buy food, fuel for heating and cooking, and things we need to meet our basic living requirements. I also manage to save money, and was able to build a house for my eldest son, so that his family can live well.”

E.Tuvshintur

Artisanal miner, 28, member of the “Bayanbulag” artisanal miners’ partnership in Bornuur soum, Tuv aimag

“Since 1998, when I was still a child, I started going to the mountain to dig for gold. Because there is no workplace in the countryside, I’ve been mining in order to support our livelihoods, and it has been helping. Compared with other soums, the income and living standards of the people in Bornuur soum are slightly better, I think, thanks to artisanal mining. People in Bornuur are making living from artisanal mining as well as cultivating crops. Most of our miners want to save enough within the next five years to start their own businesses.”

S.Dugersuren

A leader of the Ikh Myangan Pasture Users’ Group and a member of the Soum Citizen’s Representative Khural, Tsagaankhairkhan soum, Zavkhan aimag

“I was elected as a member of the soum Citizens’ Representatives Khural in the most recent election. Before, we all thought that running in the election was only for people who lived in the soum centre, and that what they did was not really a concern for us herders. Since 2009, when I was selected to become a PUG (Pasture Users’ Group) leader, I realised that there were many things we herders could do together and, more importantly, to be accepted as a legal community.”
