en termes de mouvements translationnels et on définit un coefficient de self diffusion appa-rent

quasi-elastic
scatteringexperiments
in the smectic H, C and Aphases
ofTBBA are
presented, using
the high resolutionbackscattering technique.
The data areanalyzed
interms of translational motion and are characterized by an apparent self diffusion coefficient
Dap.
The
physical meaning
ofDap
is discussed in terms of the true bulk self diffusion tensor and other kinds of translational motions.Continuing
ourstudy
ofterephtal-bis-butyl-aniline (TBBA) by
incoherent neutronscattering [1, 2, 3, 4]
we have used the very
high
resolutionbackscattering technique [5, 6],
to measure thebroadening
of thequasi-elastic
line in the smecticH,
C and Aphases
due to translational motions
[7, 8].
Inprevious
work
[1]
we showed that thequasi-elastic spectra
are
composed
of a very narrow linesuperimposed
on a much broader one
arising
from rotational motions. In the SmHphase,
this broad line is about 100~eV
FWHM andpreliminary experiments
of asimilar nature show that the width is
notably
greater in the C and Aphases.
On the scale of thepresent
measurements
(experimental
windowof ±
7~eV
around nro =
0)
the above rotational contribution to thespectra
can be considered to agood approxi-
mation as a flat
signal,
anybroadening
of the narrowcentral line is
probably
due to translational motions.The
polydomain sample
used[partially
deuteratedspecimen
DTBBA[1] completely
deuterated on thebutyl chains],
the container and thetemperature regulation
system were the same as inprevious
work[1].
Threescattering angles
were measured simul-taneously
for elasticQ
of0.15,
0.28 and 0.54A-1.
The instrumental energy resolution
(about
1~eV FWHM)
was derived from thespectrum
obtained in thecrystalline (room temperature) phase
of thesame
sample.

ratures around the SmH-SmC and SmC-SmA tran- sitions are shown in

with the expe- rimental resolution. The full curves are the best fit of a lorentzian curve(FWHM : AE)

The width AE was foundFIG. 1. - Neutron quasi-elastic spectra (corrected for container
scattering) of a powder sample of partially deuterated TBBA obtained by the backscattering technique, for four temperatures in the smectic phases. Neutron momentum transfer Q = 0.28 A-1.
The experimental resolution function is shown on spectrum d.
The full curves are the best fit of a lorentzian curve convoluted with the resolution function together with a flat background. This
background is shown by dashed lines.

The features of this result are :(i) Dap

there is a drasticjump
FIG. 2. - Diffusion coefficients in TBBA versus 103/T, A, 0 : apparent self diffusion coefficients Dap calculated from relation (1).
The widths AE were deduced from spectra obtained in two different
experiments. Sample used : partially deuterated TBBA. - 0 : average value of the self diffusion coefficient measured by a multi- pulse NMR technique [12]. Sample used : normal TBBA. - The
slope of the straight line in the smectic C and A phases is about
9 kcal/mole.

might question
the choice of a lorentzianshape
for the theoretical
expression
of the translationalpart
of thescattering
law. In view of therelatively
poor statistics a fit with more than two
parameters (width
andbackground)
would bemeaningless.
However,
as can be seen fromfigure 1,
theexperi-
mental
spectra
are allslightly
morepeaked
than thesingle lorentzian,
asexpected
from a system where the self diffusion isanisotropic (see
the discussionin section 3 of ref.
[9]).
We shall now discuss thephysical meaning
of theexperimental
values ofDap
found in the various smectic
phases.
a)
Smectic Hphase : Comparing
the resolution function(in Fig. l d)
and the directspectrum (Fig. l a),
ethe reader will see that the
broadening
is very small( ~ 1/10
of theresolution).
It is not clear wetherthe measured,
temperatureindependent,
coefficientDap ~
6 x 10-8cm2/s
ismeaningful
or not.Since our
sample
is inpowder form,
thisslight broadening
could reflect self diffusionthrough grain boundaries,
it may be that the bulk self diffusion is in fact much smaller. This view issupported by
asimilar unsuccessful
experiment [10] performed by
uson a smectic H monodomain and also a recent NMR measurement
(1)
where the self diffusion coefficientwas found to be smaller than
10-8 cm2/s.
b)
Smectic C and Aphases :
Here there is a markedbroadening
of thespectra
and the values ofDap
can beconsidered to be accurate within ± 20
%.
This rather poor accuracy arises both from the low statistics in theseexperiments
and thefinite Q
resolution. The latter is due to the width of theanalyzer crystals
andcan be calculated
exactly.
In our case, its contribution is much smaller than that due to the statistics.Macroscopic
self diffusion coefficients have been measuredrecently by
NMR[11, 12].
The self diffusionwas found to be
anisotropic
in both the smectic C and smectic Aphases.
Thecorresponding
averages for twotemperatures
are shown infigure
2. Thesevalues are smaller
by
afactor ~ y
thanDap.
If theNMR
technique gives
the true bulk self diffusion coefficients[13],
sometranslational
motion other than the self diffusion also contribute to the broaden-ing
of the neutronspectra.
We havethought
of twopossible explanations :
(i)
Self diffusionthrough grain
boundaries : in thepresent
case, we had apowder sample
whereas in theNMR measurements the
sample
wasaligned
witha 15 kG field
yielding large
monodomains.(ii)
The secondpossibility
is related to the ondu- lation modes[14]
present in both smectic A and Cphases.
De Gennes
[15]
has calculated the incoherentscattering
functionG( w)
associated with these modes and shownthat,
in certainconditions,
this func- tion mustdiverge
at lowfrequencies, typically 108
Hz ~ 1~eV.
Thiscorresponds exactly
to thepresent
energy range.Moreover,
one condition forobserving
such effects is to work atQ
values of the order 0.2Å -1,
whichagain
is the case here.Finally,
we have verified that the convolution of
G’((u) (eq. (10)
of ref.
[15])
with a lorentzian curve(simulating
theresolution
function) produces
aspectrum
whose behaviour versusQ 2
is very similar to thatproduced by
the self diffusion mechanism. To decide in favour of
explanation (b),
more accu-rate neutron
experiments
are needed : with asingle
domain and better statistics. We
hope
to carry out suchexperiments
in the near future. We are indebted to Pr. P. G. De Gennes for sti-
mulating
discussions andreading
themanuscript.

[13] In fact, the true value of the self diffusion coefficient can be obtained only in the limit Ql ~ 1 where l is the greatest molecular dimension and 1/Q the distance over which the translational motion is observed. In a NMR experiment using a field gradient, one usually follows the diffusing particles over semi-macroscopic distances so that the
above condition is always verified. This technique should
thus give the true bulk self diffusion coefficients. With the neutron technique, even with the smallest Q available Q ~ 0.15 Å-1, and l ~ 25 A, we have Ql.> 1. Conse- quently, any low frequency large amplitude (of the order
of the molecular length) oscillation, can produce similar
effects to the self diffusion.
