Preface

This volume contains papers presented at the 6th Balkan Conference in Informatics (BCI’13), which was held during September 19–21, 2013, in Thessaloniki, Greece.

BCI’13 continued the tradition of the successful BCI series of conferences previously held in Thessaloniki (2003), Ohrid (2005), Sofia (2007), Thessaloniki (2009) and Novi Sad (2012).

The main objective of the BCI series of conferences is to provide a forum for dissemination of research accomplishments and to promote interaction, discussions and collaboration among scientists from South-East European countries and the rest of the world. Special emphasis is given to encourage involvement of young researchers from the region to present their work, as well as experts in the field to present current developments in South-East Europe, in the areas of Governance, Education and ICT Professional Issues & Priorities.

The entire ICT community of Thessaloniki joined efforts and contributed to the organisation of this year’s Conference:

 Greek Computer Society, Macedonia - Thrace Chapter

 Department of Informatics - Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

 Department of Applied Informatics - University of Macedonia

 Department of Information Technology - Alexander T.E.I. of Thessaloniki

 The University of Sheffield International Faculty - City College

 South-East European Research Centre

Traditionally, BCI conferences call for papers dealing with theory and/or applications in wide areas of ICT. This year’s accepted papers belong to the following areas:

 Algorithms and Theoretical Foundations

 Artificial Intelligence

 Computer Graphics, GUI, Visualization & GIS

 Computer Networks

 Computer Security

 Data Management

 Informatics Applications

 Informatics Education and e-Learning

 Mobile Computing/Applications

 Software Engineering

 Web Systems/Applications

In total, out of 103 papers submitted in conference, 41 were accepted and published in the ACM Proceedings, while this volume contains 27 papers. All papers were triple reviewed by members of an International Programme Committee and were selected during a rigorous process.

We are grateful to all members of the BCI Committees for their enthusiasm and time investment towards the successful organisation of the conference. Special thanks go to the Programme Committee members and reviewers for accepting the workload in a tight schedule and for submitting their opinions and careful comments on the papers.

Last, but not least, we thank all the participants for making BCI’13 a live, fruitful scientific event.
