FAO/CIFA SEMINAR ON'AFRICAN FISHERIES, AQUACULTIJRE AI\ID TI{E EI{UROI\IMEI''{T - HAR^A,REZIMBABWE: 5-7 DECEMBER 1994
MISSION REPORT
Duration: 03.12.94
to
10.L2.94 (Including travelling time).Officer Reporting:
Dr
E.K. Abban, Institute of Aquatic Biology, Ghana.Specific function: To present a paper on behalf of OCP Fish monitoring prograrnme- Titled "The Fish Monitoring Programme of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa: A Model for Fish and Fisheries Preservation in the Face of Development".
Authors: E.K. Abban, L. Yameogo. K. Traore, M. Diop and E.M. Samba.
Summary activities: The seminar started on 05.12.94. The paper of OCP was one of six selected for oral presentation out of.24. The presentation was made on the morning of 06.t2.94.
After the presentations and discussions
of
all24 papers, the aquatic monitoring programme of the OCP was considered and documented by the seminar as the "most environmentally sound considered developmental activity".After the presentation, I was coopted together with trvo others to summarize the 24 papers and moderate their general discussion.
Finally, I was
again cooptedinto
anothergroup of three to draft
therecommendations to African governments and FAO as an outcome of the seminar.
Recommendation: From reactions
to
the paper,it
was obvious that the very sound environmental policies of OCP is not general knowledge to environmentally concerned agencies outside those involved in the programme. It is therefore
suggestedthat the OCP could
either seminars/conferenees similar to the above to disseminate the monitoriOCP, or organize one to achieve the same objective.
