ON THE caVER: Bulk Metallic Glasses: At the Culling Edge 01Metals Research. Glassyalloys (metallic glasses) are currently the locus 01intense research in the international rnetalscornrnunity.

Metallic glasses olier attractive benelits, combining some 01the desirable properties of conventional crystalline metals and the lormability of conventional oxide glasses. However, no pure metals and few metallic alloys are natural glass-formers. A major challenge, therefore, is to obtain glassy alloys in bulk form in a simple operation. The articles in this issue discuss the major materials issues for bulk metallic glasses, fram processing to structures to properties, and fram the fundamental science of glasses to viable industrial applications. Shown here is(top) a Pd4oCU30Ni,oP20bulk metallic glass, 72 mm in diam- eter. The cast ingot shows a metallic luster, like con- ventional alloys, but the internai atomic structure of such glassy alloys is completely noncrystalline, as shown by the mode! (botlom) for the amorphous structure of a simple binary Zr-Pt metallic glass. The silver spheres in the model represent solvent Zr atoms centeredaround Pt solute atoms. Seethe technical theme that begins on p. 611.
