FORMULAIRE DE DEMANDE DE STAGE
Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs France aims to create new growth opportunities with disruptive innovation and to provide a competitive market
advantage for Alcatel-Lucent. Separated into eight domains, each covers the continuum of an entire research lifecycle from generation to transfer – and is involved in the mentoring of active research projects and developing and transferring technologies to the business. There also is an 'undirected' component that gives researchers the creative freedom to pursue new ideas. The Triple-play Wireless Network department, within the Networking Domain, pursues research around the support of new communication medias and applications over next generation networks.
The Internet usage nowadays is geared towards content centric activity, including consuming and exchanging voluminous files and processing. A typical example is video download and streaming from disseminated content storage locations and Peer to Peer file exchange. These applications are currently done on an application overlay and completely agnostic to the underlying transport network topology. The consequence is a waste of network resources often at the expenses of operators who get no benefits from this transient traffic.
The IETF ALTO (Application Layer Traffic Optimization) working group aims at addressing this issue with the following tenets: better- than-random peer selection is helpful in the initial phase of the process; the use of topology information in an early stage will allow applications to improve their performance and will help ISPs make a better use of their network resources. In particular, an economic goal for ISPs is to reduce the transit traffic on interdomain links.
Alcatel-Lucent, as an equipment vendor and ALTO contributor, aims at assisting the network operators by providing them with solutions to select content storage locations in order to minimize the costs of transient traffic.
The objective of this internship is to help specifying and implementing an ALTO service to select the optimal locations from which to get, to which to put, with which to exchange data files and processing power. The intern will work firstly on controlled information exchange between the application and transport layers and secondly on optimized selection of application endpoints.
This internship involves the following steps:
- bibliography update on name resolution schemes used for Content Delivery Networks and P2P applicatiions, - bibliography update on the ALTO working group and related topics,
- implementation in C of an ALTO Client,
- implementation of interface with the optimization algorithm, - integration and validation of the implemented service.
Tools/resources suggested:
Linux/C++ environment.
