Argument

Nowadays, Open Access frameworks dedicated to epistemology in Ancient and Medieval fields remain far too few. The main objective of the journal Frontière·s. Revue d’Archéologie, Histoire & Histoire de l’art is to provide an efficient publication support to the scientific community based on the peer review.

This project, led by junior researchers, is housed by Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée Jean Pouilloux and supported by Jean Moulin University (Lyon 3).

In the field of Ancient studies, the common understanding of

‘border’ is often restricted to geopolitical limits. However, it is possible to understand ‘border’ in a wider way according to the modes of separation. Though, depending on the way of splitting, it could encompass any meanings: concrete or abstract boundaries, built or natural ones, etc. Authors are invited to consider every kind of separation between individuals, not only geophysical, state or political ones, but also social, cultural, symbolic, linguistic, metaphysical boundaries.

Frontière·s provides a cross-sectoral framework to archaeologists, historians and art historians, and moreover, a work tool published on a semestrial basis.

Ongoing CFP : ‘Materializing the border’

Materializing a border gives it a concrete reality. Although a border is seen as a visible and perceptible object, it also can be intagible. It is, however, made concrete through the eyes of ar- chaeologists, the historians and the art historians. It can be per- ceived as a barrier or interface between several spaces.

In this third issue, authors are invited to discuss the processes of formalization and conception of the border. The lines of research may apprehend:

• Natural and topographical elements and particular markings (bollards, walls, furrows, ditches, doors, etc.) used to make concrete a real, abstract or symbolic limit, such as delimiting the world of the dead from the world of the living, the sacred from the profane, the servant from the ritual etc. ;

• The use of officers to achieve or maintain a border;

• Iconographic and cartographic representations or descriptions of the border, to better perceive a territory that fluctuates across its boundaries;

• The use of material data to highlight cultural, political, social and economic boundaries between different communities;

• The process of materialization and its transformation in time and space.
