ADEA-ADEE Shaping the Future of Dental Education III - Oral Health From a Global Perspective, was a collabora-tive event held by the American Dental Education Associa-tion (ADEA) and AssociaAssocia-tion for Dental EducaAssocia-tion in Europe (ADEE), on April 25-27, 2019, in Brescia, Italy. The ADEA-ADEE collaboration was visionary in bringing together dental educators from around the world to discuss critical topics in dental education, with an emphasis on improving oral health as part of total health for all.
The ADEA-ADEE meeting in Brescia was built upon the success of ADEA/ADEE Shaping the Future of Dental Educa-tion II held in London, England in 2017. The manuscripts1–5 resulting from this seminal conference set the format for the 2019 joint meeting based on the four tenets from the London meeting:
“[I]t was proposed that this joint meeting should have a very distinct profile, reflecting goals and expertise of the two major organisations as fol-lows:
• Create a programme and venue that is open and attractive to an international audience;
• Create an interactive programme with a unique format; • Produce outcomes that are useful and valuable to our global
community of dental academicians; • Focus on the future.”1

workshop leaders representing 39 countries gathered at the University of Brescia to explore dental educators’ roles and capabilities as a means to impact global oral health educa-tion. Colleagues shared what their dental academic institu-tions are doing to improve total health through better oral health outcomes, with an emphasis on underserved popula-tions. The expertise, professional discussion, and discourse added to our capacity as faculty to enhance the higher education environments for our students and colleagues alike.
The event began with the opening plenary provided by Benoit Varenne, D.D.S., M.P.H., Ph.D., Dental Officer in the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) department, World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Varenne delivered an insightful presentation titled: Future of Oral Health Workforce Education to Provide People-Centered Health Services in the Context of UHC–WHO Perspectives.
This presentation underlined how health, oral health promotion, and dental education objectives can be linked, worldwide, within a public health perspective. Indeed, dental education plays an important role in shaping the treatments and preventive services offered to the populations. The 2019 ADEE-ADEA Shaping the Future of Dental Education III program was designed around four key themes, listed below, using a workshop format. Facilitators led planning based on the concept of identifying and engaging global content experts to guide participants’ learning through the work-shop activities. The four workwork-shop themes and presenters were:
