Risks, Resources, and Record of the Past on the Continental Shelf IUGS and UNESCO support IGCP526

Third Annual Meeting Rabat, Morocco, 5-9 October, 2009

From October 5th to 9th, the Scientific Institute (Rabat) hosted the IGCP project 526 Third Annual Meeting (http://igcp526.io.usp.br/)

The aims were :

• To facilitate international collaboration amongst scientists studying continental shelf related topics.

• To facilitate knowledge and technology transfer related to continental shelf research among disparate disciplines and regions around the world.

• To hold annual and regional meetings around the world, particularly in developing countries, to facilitate the transmission of continental shelf research and applications.

• To provide project-related short courses, particularly in developing countries, which focus on disseminating continental shelf knowledge and application.

• To promote the use of continental shelf research across discipline boundaries, with particular emphasis on their application to global issues that influence human society.

• To provide comprehensive research publications resulting from project contributions.

The scientific programme included 5 keynote lectures, 26 talks and invited talks, 2 project sessions and daily poster sessions.

The main subjects were hazards, minerals and aggregates, living resources, Carbon cycle and climate change, and paleoanthrophology and Paleoenvironments.

The conference was attended by 70 participants from Europe (France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Estonia), America (Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chili, Peru), Australia, Asia (China, India) and Morocco, who exposed 45 oral presentations and posters.

78 Field trip

The conference included on 8 October a field trip to the coastal area south of Rabat. The objective was to illustrate the Quaternary formations and their control by climatic and sea-level changes, and also to visit the high-energy deposits, especially megaboulders emplaced upon the rocky platforms (leaders: M. Akil, F. Medina, N. Mhammdi and A. Chiguer).
