Dear Reader,

In January 2006, I had the pleasure of informing you about a new Associate Editor, new members of our Editorial Board, and a new Advisory Board. The expanded team has now worked for over one year, and as a result I can inform you about some important new developments with the Journal of Biomolecular NMR.

A first news concerns the manuscript type ‘Letter to the Editor: New NMR Assignment’ (‘‘Assignment Notes’’). Since its inception, the publication of ‘Assignment Notes’ in J. Biomol. NMR has had an important impact on biomolecular NMR, in particular also by encouraging complete and timely deposition of NMR parameters in the appropriate databanks. There was also a rapid increase of submissions, which enabled us to print the 2006 ‘Assignment Notes’ in a separate issue, the Supplement to volume 36 of J. Biomol. NMR. To further emphasize the important role of timely communication of NMR assignments of biological macromolecules, we now go a step further and start a new Journal, Biomolecular NMR Assignments (www.springer.com/12104). Editor-in-Chief is Professor Arthur G. Palmer III, who will continue to serve as an Associate Editor of J. Biomol. NMR and thus ensure proper liaison between the two journals.

Submissions to Biomolecular NMR Assignments can be made as of now, following the instructions provided in an advertisement contained in this issue of J. Biomol. NMR. For the transition period, the ‘Assignment Notes’ published online since September 2006 will be published in a regular issue of J. Biomol. NMR. All submissions of ‘Letter to the Editor: New NMR Assignment’ received by one of the Editors of J. Biomol. NMR, but not yet published online, are automatically forwarded to the new journal, to ensure a rapid and prosperous start of Biomolecular NMR Assignments.

Secondly, in response to popular demand, J. Biomol. NMR resumes publication of short reports dedicated to work of unusual urgency and significance. The format for such ‘Communications’ is described in the ‘Instructions for Authors’ contained in this issue. Henceforth, our Journal thus accepts manuscripts for publication as ‘Articles’, ‘Communications’ and ‘NMR Structure Notes’. These reports of new, original data are supplemented with occasional publications of invited ‘Perspectives’.

Thirdly, on behalf of the Editors and the Publisher, I am pleased to announce that J. Biomol. NMR has decided to change its submission procedure to electronic submission only. At the same time, we are in a position to offer free reproduction of color illustrations to all prospective authors. Details are given in the ‘Instructions for Authors’ contained in this issue.

With the changes introduced in this Editorial, we look forward to continued growth of the Journal of Biomolecular NMR and a successful start of Biomolecular NMR Assignments, and we thank our authors for their continued support in submitting their work to our Journals
