Representations of Mary, the Mother of God, between official cult and local veneration.

Even if the figure of Mary, the Mother of Jesus is so familiar to Christian culture, the dynamics of the traditions regarding her cult are still not sufficiently well known. Created and established by the decisions of the Church councils, hagiographies whose authority is recognized throughout the Christian world, the image of Mary is also shaped by the communities that worship her, which explains the large number of iconographic and textual traditions surrounding the image of Mary during in the first centuries AD and up to the present day, some of which are considered apocryphal.
The diversity of the latter often prevents us from understanding how these testimonies of devotion from various areas came to interact over time and their possible influence on the official discourse of the Church.
Addressed to educated people and those who did not speak the sacred languages, the stories about Mary are told, translated, copied, painted and often reconfigured by their transmission from one cultural space to another, or from one form of discourse to another, and together make up the image of the figure of Mary. Almost every detail of Mary’s life becomes significant and is likely to be transposed to a text or an image or associated with liturgical practices.
The purpose of this colloquium is to bring together philologists, historians, art historians and theologians interested in exploring these narrative networks about Mary, which connect different cultural spaces and means of discourse in the premodern period.
Special attention will be paid to the miracles of Mary.
This colloquium follows in the wake of similar academic events: Les miracles de Notre- Dame du Moyen-Âge à nos jours, organised by Jean-Louis Benoit and held at the Institut Catholique de Rennes (2019); Miracles of the Virgin Mary. Medieval narratives through time and space, organized by Anthony John Lappin and Ewa Balicka-Witakowska and held in Dublin and Maynooth (2017); La Vierge Marie dans la littérature française: entre foi et literature, organised by Jean-Louis Benoit at the Université de Bretagne-Sud (2014).
Those wishing to participate are asked to submit by 31 March 2020, a summary of their lecture of no longer than 30 lines in English, French or German, along with a bibliography and 3-5 key words, to: marianicrepresentations@gmail.com.
Applicants will receive reply form the organizers by 30 April 2020.
The colloquium will take place between 23 and 24 October 2020.
Papers will be presented in English, French or German.
Participation fee: 50 euros or 250 RON; for master’s and doctoral students – 30 euros or 150 RON.

Représentations de la Vierge Marie entre culte officiel et vénération locale.

Même si la figure de la Vierge Marie est si familière à la culture chrétienne, la dynamique des traditions concernant le culte de Marie reste encore peu connue. Créée et fixée par les décisions des Conciles de l'Église, par des hagiographies dont l'autorité est reconnue dans le monde chrétien, l'image de la Vierge Marie se forme également dans les communautés qui la vénèrent, ce qui explique le grand nombre de traditions iconographiques et textuelles relatives à la figure marianique à partir des premiers siècles ap. J.-Ch. jusqu'à nos jours et dont certaines sont considérées comme des apocryphes. Leur diversité nous empêche assez souvent de comprendre la manière dont ces témoignages de dévotion de différentes zones culturelles sont arrivés à interagir au fil du temps et de saisir leur influence possible sur le discours officiel de l'Église.
S'adressant à la fois aux érudits et à ceux qui ne connaissaient pas les langues sacrées, les récits sur la Mère de Dieu sont performés oralement, sont traduits, copiés, peints, souvent reconfigurés en passant d'un espace culturel à l’autre ou d'une forme discursive à l’autre, en tissant ainsi l'image du personnage. Presque tout détail concernant la vie de la Vierge devient significatif et susceptible d'être transposé en texte ou en image ou associé à des pratiques liturgiques.
Ce colloque a pour objectif de réunir des philologues, des historiens, des historiens de l'art et des théologiens intéressés à explorer ces réseaux narratifs sur la Vierge, qui relient de différents espaces culturels et de modalités discursives différentes, dans l'époque pré-moderne.
Une attention particulière sera prêtée aux corpus des miracles de la Sainte Vierge.
Le colloque se situe dans la lignée de manifestations scientifiques similaires, organisées à l'Institut Catholique de Rennes (2019), Les miracles de Notre-Dame du Moyen-Âge à nos jours, organisé par Jean-Louis Benoit, à Dublin et Maynooth (2017), Miracles of the Virgin Mary. Medieval narratives through time and space, organisé par Anthony John Lappin et Ewa Balicka-Witakowska, et à l'Université de Bretagne-Sud (2014), La Vierge Marie dans la littérature française : entre foi et littérature, sous la coordination de Jean-Louis Benoit.
