The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (Standard)

The Standard, launched in January 2013, was championed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), and developed by the Canadian Standards Association and the Bureau de normalisation du Québec. It is a framework that provides guidance on how to promote employees’ psychological health and prevent psychological harm due to workplace factors. It includes tools and resources that are applicable to any organization.

The first of its kind in the world, the Standard has garnered much attention and uptake in Canada, internationally, and across all sectors, as it helps at an organizational level to create long-term, structural changes. The Standard is:

A set of tools — not rules — applicable to all organizations.

A free resource that can be downloaded at

www.mentalhealthcommission.ca/nationalstandard.

Currently being examined as part of the three-year Case Study Research Project, which is following more than 40 organizations as they implement the Standard.

Training Programs for Creating Mentally

Healthy Workplaces

The Working Mind

This training program reduces stigma, increases mental resiliency, and teaches employees how to manage stress.

It is an education-based program based on the Department of National Defence’s program called Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR). This program teaches participants how to identify positive, poor, and declining mental health in themselves and others, as well as coping skills to manage stress and poor mental health. It is:

A half-day, four-hour, basic course for employees that focuses on dispelling myths and reducing stigma.

A full-day training program for managers/leadership which includes basic course content, plus workplace accommodations and how to communicate with employees about mental illness.

A five-day, pass/fail, “Train the Trainer” course that equips participants with the tools and skills to present both the basic and manager courses.

Mental Health First Aid Canada

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or

experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. This program teaches participants how to respond effectively to emerging mental health problems and crises. It is:

A two-day training program that provides skills and confidence to engage in effective conversations about mental health at work and at home.

An internationally evaluated program whose outcomes include greater awareness, reduced stigma, and increased helping behaviors.

A valuable resource that has trained over 150,000 Canadians and more than 15,000 workplaces since 2007.
