Preface

The EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium is part of the EC-TEL since its beginning in 2005.

The Doctoral Consortium is part of the doctoral program of the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning (EA-TEL). Besides the Doctoral Consortium this program comprises the JTEL Summer School. Together, these two events together have been shaping and enriching the experiences of many young researchers on their course to their Ph.D and build to the community that focuses on and solves the transdiscipli- nary challenges of our field.

This volume contains the papers presented at Doctoral Consortium of the 13th Eu- ropean Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2018) held on Sep- tember 3, 2018 in Leeds, UK. There were 18 submissions and at least 2 program com- mittee members reviewed each submission. 14 submissions were found eligible for presentation at the doctoral consortium. The 11 papers in this volume completed the full reflection cycle that is characteristic for the EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium.

The EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium is designed as a training event for Ph.D. candi- dates that seeks to improve the quality of their research. This starts with expressing the own research project and with identifying the limitations and challenges of the present stage. These initial submissions were reviewed by the program committee of senior members of the community. In order to strengthen the learning experience, every par- ticipant had to review two other submissions and raise questions. Together the reviews provide the foundation for the presentations at the Doctoral Consortium, which were then discussed and challenged by the board of experts. After the Doctoral Consortium all participants had the opportunity to present their work as a poster at the main confer- ence, which creates a unique opportunity to engage into discussions with the wider research community. All papers included into these proceedings have been reworked to include the various insights.

The submissions to this year's doctoral consortium show the continued relevance for Ph.D. candidates to get qualitative feedback on their projects beyond the level of re- search papers. Receiving submissions from across Europe and event from the US, the EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium shows its international relevance. This is complemented by EA-TEL's activities for building the doctoral community including sponsoring the EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium's social event.

This year also marks a generation change for, both, the EC-TEL Doctoral Consor- tium as well as the EA-TEL doctoral program. After 12 successful years Katherine Maillet retired from chairing the EA-TEL doctoral program and the EC-TEL Doctoral Consortium. I thank Katherine for her passion over the past years, that also influenced my own Ph.D. studies. I am honored to continue her activities for supporting young European researchers in expanding our understanding of using technologies in educa- tion.
