SPECIAL ISSUE ULTRASONICS
Foreword
A. ZAREMBOWITCH The Editorial Committee of the Revue de
Physique Appliquée,
inchoosing
« Ultrasonics » as the theme fora
special
issue, wanted to underline theimportance
of scientific and industrialdevelopments
in this field ; one example, amongst others, is witness to this great progress : in 1985 theever-increasing
world turnover of ultra-sonic medical
imagery bipassed
half of classicalradiography’s impressive figure.
Another
equally important
reasoninspired
this choice : thespectacular
results obtained in the field of ultrasonics illustrate veryclearly
the close links which exist between fundamentalknowledge
andapplied
research ; the cross fertilisation between these twoapproaches
becomes clearthroughout
this volume.It is
impossible
to cover the many diverseapplications
of ultrasonics in onespecial
issue. A selection is thereforeproposed
which wehope
isrepresentative
of the work carried out inspecialized
laboratories ;approxi- mately
half of the articles come from French laboratories as research in this field isparticularly
activethroughout
France. In addition, eminent
foreign colleagues greeted
with enthousiasm the offer topublish
their latest results in thisspecial
issue.Throughout
1 have been veryefficiently helped by
Professor E. DIEULESAINT whom 1 now take thisopportunity
to thank.Article published online by EDP Sciences and available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/rphysap:01985002006028200
