Le département de l'Aude, caractérisé par une géographie allant de la mer à la montagne et des influences climatiques pyrénéennes, méditerranéennes et continentales et traversé par des couloirs de migration d'avifaune importants, est d'une richesse en biodiversité exceptionnelle. Cela se traduit notamment par une couverture à près de 40 % du département en sites Natura 2000
(18% en France), sans compter les sites Natura 2000 en mer.
Le réseau Natura 2000, mis en place en application de la Directive
"Oiseaux" de 1979 et de la Directive "Habitats" de 1992, vise à la fois à assurer la survie à long terme des espèces et des habitats particulièrement menacés, à forts enjeux de conservation
en Europe et à valoriser les territoires.
