The Context

All over the world women play and have always played an important role in fisheries and aquaculture within coastal communities: This role can be linked to the production, processing and selling. In family based enterprises women also have a key role in the management.

Women, however, face many challenges. Traditional activities, like net mending or repair, tend to disappear with industrial manufacturing. Small scale fishing and processing have to compete with large scale international co-operations and chains. In many countries women in fishery and aquaculture do not enjoy a professional status and their role is not recognised through remuneration or access to social benefits. It is a type of work that women do in addition to their responsibility to care for house, children, husbands and other relatives, in a sector where men often are away from home.

Women in fisheries and aquaculture have, however, started to raise their voices to gain recognition of their work but also to become active in public debates about fishing communities and livelihood, safety at sea, resource management, the development of the local industry and research. In many places they have started to organise themselves in autonomous organisations or with men within established fisheries bodies. Some of them want to share analysis and experiences by initiating international networking and by exchanging with scientists.

The international conference AKTEA is an opportunity to raise these and other themes and share experience at the international level. We hope to create a meeting place for fisherwomen and researchers from the South, East, West and North!

AKTEA, the newsletter of the programme “FEMMES”

Since 2003, AKTEA has functioned as the newsletter of the programme FEMMES, published in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese. The programme FEMMES is an initiative funded by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme for Research to promote networking of women’s association in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Europe. Started in 2002, for a period of three years, the programme is animated by a group of social scientists and fisherwomen organisations.

The international conference AKTEA

The initiative of the international conference comes from the researchers of the programme

“FEMMES” and it is financially supported by DG Fisheries of the European Commission, the Centre for Law and Economy of the Sea (University of Western Brittany, Brest, France) and the Conselleria de Pesca of the Autonomous Government of Galicia, Spain. The conference is open to women and researchers from all parts of the world.

The conference AKTEA will be a unique opportunity for women in fisheries and aquaculture from all over the world to meet and exchange ideas, experiences and strategies. It will also be a meeting place between women and researchers from different disciplines working on women related issues. Researchers themselves will find in this conference a rare opportunity to expose and develop their work

To allow everyone an opportunity for expression, the conference will be organised in different types of events.
