Synopsis

Editor's Note

This report presents detailed infor- mation about the major alphanu- meric display terminals currently available in the U.S. and Canada.

For the first time, we also provide coverage of the emerging and rapidly expanding X terminal sector of the display industry.

A separate market overview identi- fies the major display terminal ven- dors and discusses market trends. A technology overview discusses the technical aspects of display terminals and addresses pertinent issues re- lated to display terminal selection.

Comparison Column Highlights This report provides information about more than 155 products of- fered by 30 vendors. The absence of any vendor or product from the col- umns means that the company either failed to respond to our repeated re- quests for information or declined to be part of the survey.

Alphanumeric displays new to this report include Digital Equipment's VT420 display, the 3270-compatible Memorex Telex 147111472 display series, and Wyse Technology'S WY- 360 graphics display. This report also covers Hewlett-Packard's newly released 700/RX Series of X

terminals-the first products to offer a RISC-based architecture-and the latest X terminal offerings ofNCD, Tektronix, Human Designed Sys- tems, and a number of other ven- dors.

Display Terminals Comparison Column Entry Descriptions

Vendor and Product The name of the manufac- turer and the product's name and model number are listed at the top of each column.

Type of Display Terminal

Functional Category.

Asynchronous displays generally fall into one of four categories: ASCII;

ANSI (Digital VT compati- ble); ASCII/ANSI (displays capable of emulating both types); and ASCII/

ANSI/PC terminals, which provide a third mode of operation. In PC terminal mode, multiple displays connect to a supermicro- computer to form a mUl- tiuser system.

Synchronous display ter- minals are generally IBM 3270 or IBM midrange products.

Jupiter Systems

Graphics Capability.

Some alphanumeric dis- play terminals can gener- ate bar charts, pie charts, and graphs. An affirma- tive answer in this cate- gory usually indicates the presence of line drawing or special graphics char- acter sets. It does not im- ply the presence of highly sophisticated graphics capabilities found on graphics-dedicated termi- nals.

Compatibility. Some products can replace dis- play terminals manufac- tured by Digital, IBM, and Unisys. Either of two types of compatibility can be offered: transmission or plug-to-plug compati- bility. Transmission com- patibility requirements include identical protocol,

code and unit code struc- ture, timing, asynchro- nous or synchronous operation, and transmis- sion speed. Most vendors with transmission-

compatible units offer ad- ditional features and functions not found in the original vendor's equip- ment, implemented via minor changes in host software. Units with true plug-to-plug compatibility not only have identical transmission parameters but also identical features and functions.

Communicates with Host.

Asynchronous displays and IBM midrange dis- plays can communicate with the host directly. Of- ten, however, a terminal server (for asynchronous displays) or a communica- tions controller (for IBM midrange displays) is used to concentrate multi- ple terminal transmissions onto a single line and to relieve the host of much of the overhead involved in managing multiple dis- play terminals. IBM 3270- compatible displays always communicate with

Visual Technology, Inc.

Terminals

their host through a com- munications controller, such as the IBM 3174.

Plug-compatible displays are designed to be com- pletely interoperable with an IBM controller or Digi- tal terminal server. Some displays, however, are designed to provide extra features using a propri- etary controller or termi- nal server.

Hardware Specifications Screen Size. The screen size is measured diago- nally and stated in inches.

Display Pedestal. Display terminals commonly in- clude a pedestal that pro- vides some vertical tilt, horizontal swivel, and, in some cases, height ad- justment capability. These features allow the user to achieve the best viewing position.

Keyboard. In this section, vendors first specify the types of U.S. keyboard styles supported. Com- monly supported styles include data entry, type- writer, and vendor- specific keyboard

arrangements such as IBM Enhanced PC and Digital VT300. Vendors also specify the number of international keyboard versions, if any, they offer and the number of pro- grammable function key combinations are pro- vided per keyboard.

Other Equipment Sup- ported. Support for a display-attached printer is almost universal today.

Some display terminals also support equipment such as a mouse, a tablet, a light pen, a bar code reader, an optical scan- ner, or a magnetic stripe card reader.

Internal Memory (bytes).

Many display terminals can retain in memory more characters than can be presented on the screen. Some vendors specify internal memory in terms of the number of screens of text; others state the amount of ran- dom access memory (RAM), in kilobytes. A few provide both types of in- formation.

Display Attributes Display Color(s}. Vendors manufacture both mono- chrome and color display terminals. The most com- mon monochrome colors are amber, green, and white. For color displays, vendors state the number of foreground and back- ground colors that can be presented simulta- neously.

Number of Shades (for graphics terminals).

Some color display term i- nals provide a palette of shades from which to

JUNE 1991

choose, and some mono- chrome display terminals with graphics capability can produce a range of gray shades. Vendors specify here the number of shades or enter "not applicable. "

Resolution. Vendors de- fine screen resolution in either of two ways: the character matrix or pixel resolution. The character matrix refers to the ar- rangement of points of light, horizontally and ver- tically, used to form indi- vidual characters. Pixel resolution refers to the total number of points, horizontally and vertically, generated on-screen. In either case, the greater the point density, the higher the image quality.

Refresh Rate (Hz). The number of times, per sec- ond, that the display's electron beam scans the entire screen, referred to as the refresh rate, is an- other factor that deter- mines image clarity.

Multisession Capability

Number of Concurrent Sessions. Some displays allow access to multiple concurrent seSSions, ei- ther on the same host computer or on multiple hosts. In some cases, the user "hot keys" between these sessions; in other cases, the user can dis- play multiple sessions in windows. (Windowing ca- pability is covered in one of the following entries.) For display terminals that do not support more than one session, "not applicable" is entered here.

Dlspla, Terminals:

Comparison Columns

Session-to-Session Copy Capability. In this entry, vendors specify whether it is possible to copy and paste text from one host session to another.

Text Processing Features

Screen Arrangements.

Information displayed on the screen of a CRT is generally arranged ac- cording to an orderly for- mat consisting of a maximum number of printed lines per screen and characters per line.

The most common dis- play capacity is 1,920 characters, arranged in 24 lines of ao characters.

Many vendors offer 132- character display lines, which can eliminate the need to revise or patch software designed for standard 132-column printers or to maintain dual sets of programs for aD-column and 132- column output.

Split-Screen Capability.

Some display screens can be partitioned into a num- ber of separate horizontal or vertical work spaces.

Data in each work space can be manipulated (e.g., scrolled, stored, or trans- mitted) independently of the others.

Operator Area. Many dis- play terminals feature a status line for system- generated messages.

Some also offer a second area for displaying terminal-specific informa- tion, such as the row and column currently occu- pied by the cursor.

Datapro Reports on Data Communications

Display Attributes. The CRT can display charac- ters in an endless number of formats. Commonly supported visual at- tributes include boldface, blinking, underlining, and reverse video. Some dis- play terminals can also generate double-wide and/or double-high char- acters.

Protect Format. The pro- tect format allows users to enter data onto a screen template that re- sembles a commonly used printed form. While information can be en- tered into certain variable fields within the template, field identifiers and other standard elements are protected from alteration or erasure.

Windowing Capability Number of Simultaneous Windows. For displays supporting both multises- sion and windowing capa- bility, the vendor specifies the maximum number of windows here. Otherwise, a "not applicable" re- sponse is entered.

Window Customization Capability.ln many win- dowing displays, the color, position, size, loca- tion, and other aspects of a window can be custom- ized by the user.

Special Features Many display terminals offer extras such as a setup menu, the ability to redefine the functions of keyboard keys, an alarm clock, a calendar, a note- pad, and record/playback capability. Vendors enter such special features in this section.

Transmission Specifications Physical Interfaces Sup- ported. Asynchronous display terminals usually have an RS-232-C inter- face for connection to an external modem. Some also support interfaces such as RS-422, RS-423, twisted pair, and MIL-188 (military). IBM 3270- compatible displays gen- erally connect directly to a communications control- ler via coaxial cable, while IBM midrange displays connect to a controller or host using twinaxial ca- ble.

Transmission Technique.

Data is transmitted either synchronously or asyn- chronously. In asynchro- nous transmission, characters propagate in irregular spurts; the dura- tion of time between suc- cessive transmitted characters can vary. In synchronous transmis- sion, characters travel in a steady stream, with a fixed time interval be- tween successive charac- ters.

Code. Two bit patterns for transmitted characters predominate: EBCDIC and ASCII. The latter has

Display Terminals:

been accepted as an in- dustry and government standard and is now the most commonly used code by display terminals.

EBCDIC is most com- monly used with IBM equipment and its re- placements.

Communications Proto- cols Supported. This en- try refers to the type of line discipline (control code sequence and con- trol characters) that the terminal uses. The four most commonly used pro- tocols are ASCII, IBM's Systems Network Archi- tecture (SNA), IBM's Bi- nary Synchronous Communications (BSC) technique, and IBM's Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) line disci- pline. Other large system vendors, such as Bull and Digital, have produced their own communications protocols. Many display terminals also conform to the ANSI X3.64 standard for control codes; if ANSI- standard conformity ex- ists, it will be indicated here.

Maximum Transmission Speed (bps). The CRT terminal is a high-speed device that is usually ca- pable of transmitting and
