T.OREWORD

The sources of the inforrnation contained herein are the published reports of fire tests conducted in accordance with the

standard methods of test AsTM EIIg and BS 476 that are available t o t h e D i v i s i o n o f B u i l d i n g R e s e a r c h a t p r e s e n t . N o t e s t s , s o f a r as is known, have yet been conducted in accordance with CSA 854.3(8).

A number of countries have adopted rnethods of fire tests that differ in some respects from those recognized by the National Building Code (4). Reforts of these tests *"y U" the subject of further iave stigation.

Tests of assemblies that contain materials identified by

trade name only have been excluded from this paper because these assemblies are not adequately identified by description.

FIRE PERFORMANCE OF COLUMNS AND BEAMS

Columns and beams in a building on fire rnust perform a

structural supporting function not a separating function. The limit

on ternperature rise on the unexposed surface that is required in the

fire tests of walls and floors does not therefore apply to columns and

beams. Failure of a column or bearn occurs when it is no longer able

to carry the load irnposed on it.
