Why Pakistan’s university students are embracing the fundamentalist life

?

WHERE ?

In Punjab University in Lahore (Pakistan)

WHO ?

IJT (Islami Jamiat-E-Talaba) -founded in 1947

-religious organization that acts as an advocacy group that serves as a liaison between students and administration

-the most powerful force in the campus

WHAT THEY DO ?

-They shape students’ life, courses, syllabuses, degree program and even faculty selection

-Their rule is to train the young generation according to Islam, so they can play a role in Pakistan’s social and political life

-IJT is the only forum to learn the necessary skills to be later a politician -students learn how to debate, how to present and defend their views and how to write persuasive proposals

-members have to abide by the Koran’s injunction to spread good and suppress evil

CONSEQUENCES ?

-abiding by the Koran’s injunction involves adopting an austere lifestyle -if you go against IJT’s codes, there is a risk of private reprimands, public denouncement and even physical violence

-there’s a climate of conservatism in the University

I think they suppressed some departments ? Which ones ? For what reason ?
