W. J. Eccles. Canadian Society During the French Régime. Mont-real: Harvest House Ltd., 1968. This is a companion volume to W. F. Mackey's Büingualism as a World Problem reviewed else-where in this issue. Both derived from lectures given at McGill's French Canada Studies Program in March, 1967 and inc1ude French and English versions of the material. Mr. Eccles, Professor of His-tory at the University of Toronto, considers his subject under the headings "The Aristocratic Welfare State" and "Affluence and Bi-culturalism." He not only provides a vivid description of life during the French régime, he also draws parallels between social and cul-tural values of 18th and 20th century Canada. The brief biblio-graphy he provides is interesting but inadequate.

Living and Learning. The Report of the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario. Toron-to: Newton Publishing Co. for the Committee, 1968. 221 pp. Illus.

The Most striking thing about this report (the Hall report) is its imaginative format. From the cover picture of chiIdren running, through the colourful end-papers of child art, to the numerous photographs of children learning in formaI and informaI environ-ments this is a far cry from the traditional dry-as-dust govern-ment report. This is alive.

While the text may not be quite as exciting as the production technique, it too is fresh and forward-Iooking. It begins with the statement that "The underlying aim of education is to further man's unending search for truth. Once he possesses the means to truth, aIl else is within his grasp. Wisdom and understanding, sensitivity, compassion, and responsibility, as weIl as intellectual honesty and personal integrity, will he his guides in adolescence and his com-panions in maturity." The Commissioners who drew up the report saw their task: "to seek and to find the structure, the organization, the curriculum, and the teachers to make this aim a reality in our schools and in our time." (p. 9)

This document, with its breadth and vigour, its ideas and in-sights, its commentaries and its detailed recommendations sets a new standard for official reports and should stimulate thought and action throughout Canada.
