Chad Gaffield, professor of history and vice-dean of the School ofGraduate Studies and Research, received the 1995 University of Ottawa Award for Excellence in Research. Dr. Gaffield's research focuses on the social history of 19th and 20th-century Canada, and on questions of theory and method in historical research. He haspublished many books and scholarly articles dealing with the history oféducation, démographie and family change, the régionalhistory of Vancouver Island and of the Ottawa Valley, and with computerization. Guest
lecturer at universities throughout Canada, as well as in the United States, France and Germany, he taught at McGilland at the University of Victoria before joining the University of Ottawa in 1985. He has won the Certificate of Merit of the Canadian Historical Association, the Minnesota Historical Society Award for Excellence in Post-Secondary Teaching, and the Riddell Award of the Ontario Historical Society. As part of the Board of the Historical
Atlas of Canada, he has won the Centenary Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, the Gold Medal of the Royal Géographie Society, and the Award of Distinction of the
Canadian Historical Association.
Maria Tippett, who is a member of the Faculty of History at Cambridgehas been appointed Senior Research Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge University.
James Leith, Presidentof the CHAandProfessor of History at Queen’s University will retire in 1997. A conférence to honour his contributionto the historiography of the French Révolution will be held in Regina in September 1996, hosted by the University of Regina.

The 8th Annual meeting of the New England Muséum Association and the Old Sturbridge Village Muséum Archives Institute will be held at Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, Massachusetts, on April 21-22 and will include both introductory and spécial topic programs. The introductory program is designed for the beginning archivist who works in a muséum or historical society and will offer a variety of comprehensive and in-depth sessions focused on basic archivai théories and practices. This year's curriculum includes such topics as reference and access, audio-visual collections, electronic records, automation, and photographs. Participants may choose to attend either of two sessions being offered concurrently, Arrangement & Description or Records Management & Appraisal. Instead of the introductory program, participants may select the spécial topic program. The Irish Cultural Symposium, Louisbourg, Cape Breton,
N.S., 11 -13 August 1995. As part of the commémorative events
planned for Louisbourg in 1995, the Fortress of Louisbourg and the University College of Cape Breton will sponsor an Irish Cultural Symposium on 11-13 August 1995. There will be a number of papers delivered on the Irish in Cape Breton, but the symposium will cover ail areas of Irish Studies. In conjunction with the Symposium there will also be a reunion of the Irish of Old Town and West Louisbourg. Historians, geographers, archaeologists, cartographers, literary specialists and others are invited to submit proposais for papers or entire sessions. The Department of History at the University of Regina is pleased to host Symbols, Myths and Images of the French Révolution: A colloquium in Honour of James A. Leith, 18-21
September 1996. James A. Leith, FRSC, will be retiring from Queen's University, Kingston, in 1997, after more than three décades as a leading historian of revolutionary France. Professor Leith, who began his teaching career in Saskatchewan, was one of the first scholars to embark upon the study of the visual imagery and symbolism of the French Révolution. More recently, he has helped to open up research into the Revolution's architectural projects. The purpose of this conférence is to honour the contribution made by Professor Leith to our understanding of the French Révolution by bringing together historians from around the world, representing diverse fields of enquiry and schools of interprétation. It is anticipated that the publication of the conférence proceedings will represent a significant and lasting contribution to scholarship.
Papers are solicited from historians of the culture and political culture of the Révolution, as well as from those interested in the Revolution's political and social dimensions. Principal speakers include: Lynn Hunt, Colin Jones, Emmet Kennedy, Claude Langlois, Noël Parker, Rolf Reichardt, Uldolpho van de Sandt. Proposais should include the title of the paper, a brief summary of its major theme, and a brief curriculum vitae of the author.

The Study Group on the Foundations of Economie and PoliticalDemocracy, the International Political Science Association and the Caucus for a New Political Science announce a conférence on the theme: Capitalism vs. Democracy; Struggles of Résistance and for Social Change. In this conférence we seek to challenge the ideological équation of democracy with capitalism and to examine the prospects for resisting the practical assaults of capitalism on democracy. We particularly seek papers on the following topics, although other proposais are also welcome: The impact of the globalization of capital on local démocratie institutions and processes; Résistance movements within the nation-state, including analyses of the labor movement, women, indigenous peoples, électoral politics, the green movement, and others which seek to transcend the limits of capitalist democracy and économies; Résistance on the global level: transnational organizing by labor, women, indigenous people, environmentalists; attempts to democratize international institutions, the rôle of NGOs. Friends, students, fans and colleagues of Charles Tilly should reserve 6-9 October 1995 for Tillyfest, an informai gathering in honour of Chuck. (Columbus Day in the U.S. and Thanksgiving in Canada). Charles Tilly is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and History at the New School for Social Research in New York, where he directs the Center for Studies of Social Change. His work focuses on large-scale social change and its relationship to collective action, especially in Western Europe since 1500. Professor Tilly was Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto ffom 1965-1969 before moving to the University of Michigan, and thence to New York. Among his many publications, "The Contentious French" (published by Harvard University Press in 1986) shared the C. Wright Mills award of the Society for the Study of Social Problems and the 1989 American Sociological Association's Award for Distinguished Scholarly Publication. The Canadian Committee for the History of the Second World War is planning another in its sériés of conférences designed to commemorate the conflict's 50th anniversary.
