The Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region plays a pivotal role in the world’s agrifood
markets. It currently accounts for nearly 14% of global agrifood exports. In 2017, the value of
the region’s net exports topped USD 148 billion, with USD 2.60 earned from exports for every
dollar spent on imports. The LAC countries now lead the international markets of tropical
fruits, coffee, roots and tubers, oilseeds and cereals, among others.
As well as being an important supplier of agrifood products to the world, agriculture makes
major economic and social contributions. Over the last year, the agriculture sector accounted
for 4.6% of LAC’s GDP and more than 14% of all employment in the region. This figure is
considerably higher in rural areas, where around 54.6% of the working population are involved
in agricultural activities.
In addition to its current role in agrifood markets, LAC is one of the regions best placed to
increase food production in a sustainable manner, thanks to its biological riches and the land
and water available. However, there are also important challenges to overcome with regard
to the distribution and management of resources among and within countries.
This publication is intended to highlight the share of important agrifood products that the
region supplies to the rest of the world, in order to contribute data and useful information for
decision-making.
This first edition includes systematized information on the 5 main exports of the countries of the
Andean, Central, Southern, Caribbean and Northern Regions. The information demonstrates
the importance of these products both within Latin America, as well as within the global
market, in a clear, organized and rapid manner. It also provides a general overview of the
meat and dairy export markets of Latin America and the Caribbean. We trust that in addition
to serving as a source of reference for decision makers, the information presented here,
which will be updated periodically, will be useful in fostering dialogue between governments
and will be an incentive to increase trade and horizontal cooperation. Indeed, we hope that
it will represent a starting point for the formulation of initiatives that will strengthen the
development and well-being of the 125 million inhabitants of rural areas in LAC.

THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURE IN LAC
In terms of employment, agriculture accounted for more than 14 % of
total jobs in LAC.
In LAC, agriculture plays a key role in income, employment and food
generation, not just for consumption in the region but in the rest of the
world as well. In terms of production, agriculture in LAC accounted for
4.6 % of the regional GDP.

Over the last ten years, LAC’s agricultural production has increased due to
higher productivity. However, the region still needs to address a series of
outstanding issues, including a sustainable rise in agricultural productivity.
Nonetheless, over the past five years, agricultural
productivity in the region has been affected by a delay
in the implementation of technological advances and
investment on infrastructure, as well as by increased use
of inputs such as land and labor, among others.

TOWARDS
SUSTAINABLE
AGRICULTURE
LAC is the region in the world with the highest potential to sustainably increase
agricultural production and produce nutritious foods, thanks to its biological
wealth, land and water availability and scientific and technological capacities. Still,
the region must overcome major challenges regarding the availability of natural
resources and their management.
BIODIVERSITY
Low ( <10 % ) Low-medium ( 10 - 20 % ) Medium-high ( 20 - 40 % ) High ( 40 - 80 % ) Extremely high ( >80 % )The distribution of water resources is highly heterogeneous among the countries
and within them.
57 % of water resources in LAC are in the Southern Region, and 34 % in the Andean
Region.

Some LAC countries such as Chile and Mexico, which are world leaders in terms
of food production and export, display extremely high levels of water stress in
agriculture (WRI 2019). This problem also affects regions of high economic and social
value for the countries, such as the Central American dry corridor.
CHALLENGE: WATER MANAGEMENT IN LAC’S AGRICULTURAL SECTOR
