New Technology at School

Transcript

RTÉ reporter, Orla Walsh: With the ever-rising popularity of tablets, smartphones and other electronics, one school in Dublin decided to use technology to its advantage. St. Finian’s Community College in Swords has launched the St. Finian’s app, which allows parents and students alike to access homework, timetables and more. Adrian Flynn, deputy principal and creator of the app, says that the idea is to make things easier for all.

Deputy principal, Adrian Flynn: It’s an individual tool that everyone can use, the students, their parents and the teachers. And we were also trying to improve homework here in the school, the quality of homework, but also make homework more interesting for the students.

RTÉ reporter, Orla Walsh: Every student, parent and teacher gets their own login, which gives them total access to the app’s resources, including letters from the school, this means no more notes getting lost on the way home.

Parent, Declan Colgan: We get loads of information on it, that we would be waiting to come home in school bags and letters and stuff. So basically it comes straight to me so I know what happened in the school and I may be able to keep up to date with homework and everything else. And if there’s an assignment that’s due for the kids, it’s on that and I can be pushing them at home to get their assignments in on time.

RTÉ reporter, Orla Walsh: But what about the students, what do they think of this new app?

Student Alan Donnelly: It’s good because I have a match later on and I might miss my last few classes, so when I go home I can just check my homework.

Student Ciara Rogers: I like that if you have forgotten what you have for homework. If you’re in a rush to get out to your next class, then you can just look up at home what you have and it’s there.

RTÉ reporter on camera: The app here at St. Finian’s is the first of its kind in Ireland and it’s available for free for every type of smartphone.

A teacher: So tonight, for your homework, you’re going to finish your keyword worksheet, okay?

RTÉ reporter, Orla Walsh: Well, the use of technology is definitely increasing in our schools and this app is certainly one way of making sure students do their homework.
