Very early in the morning after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with precious oils. The reward of this good and conscientious steward was to be among the first to know that Jesus had been raised from the dead! Alleluia!

Learning from St. Francis

Of course, unless we understand our own sinfulness, unless we understand the urgency of re- pentance and reconciliation, the Cross makes no sense; the Resurrection makes no sense.

Easter joy is the joy of deliverance and new life. If we don’t believe in our bones that we really do desperately need these things, Easter is just another excuse for a holiday sale; and the Sac- rament of Penance, and our fasting and almsgiving, are a waste of time. But in the silence of our own hearts, if we’re honest, we know we hunger for something more than our own selfish- ness and mistakes. We were made for glory, and we’re empty of that glory until God fills us with his presence. All things are made new in the victory of Jesus Christ – even sinners like you and me. The blood of the Cross washes away death. It purifies us as vessels for God’s new life. The Resurrection fills us with God’s own life.

Easter is the greatest feast in the Christian calendar.

On this Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For Catho- lics, Easter Sunday comes at the end of 40 days of the prayer, fasting, and almsgiving of Lent. Through the spiritual struggle and self-denial, we have prepared ourselves to die in His Crucifixion, so that we can rise again with Him in new life on Easter. Easter is a day of celebration because it represents the fulfillment of our faith as Chris- tians. Through His death, Christ saved mankind from bondage to sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next. The early Christian Fathers saw Easter as the fulfillment of that promise. With the resurrection of Christ, God’s Kingdom is estab- lished on earth, in the form of the Church. Because of the central importance of Easter to the Christian faith, the Catholic Church requires that all Catholics who have made their First Communion receive the Holy Eucharist during the Easter season, which lasts through Pentecost—50 days after Easter. (The Church also urges us to take part in the Sacrament of Confession before receiving this Easter communion.) This reception of the Eucharist is a visible sign of our faith and our partici- pation in the Kingdom of God. Of course, we should receive Communion as frequently as possible.

La Pascua es la fiesta más grande en el calendario cristiano.

En este domingo, los cristianos celebran la resurrección de Jesucristo entre los muertos. Para los católicos, el Domingo de Pascua viene al final de los 40 días de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna de la Cuaresma. Easter — The Resurrection of the Lord

Easter

is a happy time for Christians around the world, and in the United States we have many fun, colorful ways to celebrate it! However, we must remember that Easter is not only about chocolate bunnies and egg hunts. In fact, there is a very special, religious reason behind Easter. Jesus was cru- cified and buried on Good Friday and all were sad and grieved of His death, but after three days His friends found the tomb empty. Jesus had risen from the dead—the Resurrection—giving us hope of a new life, an everlasting life in Heaven. We celebrate Easter to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made for us in order to save us from the sins we commit—so we can go to heaven. More importantly, Easter Sunday helps us to remember that Jesus came back from the dead and, although He is not physically among us, He is still present in our hearts. Other symbols of Easter such as rabbits, chicks, and eggs all represent new life and new begin- nings and are used during the Spring season to help us welcome new life after the darkness of Winter.

Parish Picnic/Good Stewardship Day

Saturday, May 6 - - 12:00pm — 4:00pm (Followed by Mass at 4:00pm in the Church)

Join us for a fun - filled day as we honor those who faithfully and generously give of their Time, Talent, and Treasure!

Enjoy many activities — Train rides, Pony rides, Climbing Wall, and much more.

Lunch will be served from 12:00pm — 3:30pm

NO CHARGE FOR THIS EVENT (We Appreciate our Good Stewards! ) Bring lawn chairs and/or blankets.

RSVP by signing the sheets in the Gathering Area of the Church (we want to have enough food!)

Earth Day 2017 Volunteers Needed!

On April 22 from 9:00am-12:00pm, volunteers are needed to: help weed and spruce Church grounds, plant seeds and plants in garden, plant fruit trees. Bring shovels, garden gloves, and pruning shears. Volunteers are also needed to care for the garden on a daily basis from late April through summer—to water, weed, pick vegetables. (Vegetables are picked on Wednesday and Friday mornings and de- livered to St Vincent de Paul. Día de la Tierra 2017 ¡Se Necesitan Voluntarios!

El 22 de abril de 9:00am-12:00pm, se necesitan voluntarios para: ayudar a desherbar y arreglar los jardines de la iglesia, sembrar semillas, plantas de jardín, y sembrar árbo- les frutales. Traiga tijeras de podar, palas y guantes de jardín. También se necesitan voluntarios para cuidar el jardín diariamente desde finales de abril a través del verano — para aguar, desherbar y recoger los vegetales. (Los vegetales se recogen los miércoles y los viernes por la mañana y se entregaran a San Vicente de Paul. Please park in the marked spaces.

During this Easter season we will see additional numbers at all Masses. Families will have out of town visitors and some who have no church affiliation will attend Mass at St. Philip’s. Please be respectful of fellow parishioners and visitors. There are many parking spaces in lots on the side and rear of the Church. It is not necessary to park along the curb in front of, on the side of, or the back of the Church. The San Damiano parking lot is reserved for Seniors and those with handicap parking permits. All other handicap parking spots should be reserved for those with permits, including the ones behind the church. Also, observe the areas marked “NO PARKING” in front of the parish hall and white garage as well as other curbside areas around the property. These areas must be kept clear for emergency vehicles and access to the garage. Parking problems should not mar our ob- servance of this holy season—think, “What would Jesus do?”

Durante esta temporada de Semana Santa veremos números adiciones en todas las misas. Las familias tendrán visitantes de otras ciudades y algunos que no tienen afiliación religiosa asistirán a las misas aquí en San Felipe. Por favor, sea respetuoso con los feligreses y visitantes. Hay muchos espacios de estacionamiento en la parte del lado y la parte posterior de la iglesia. No es necesario estacionar a lo largo de la acera en frente de, al lado de, o la parte posterior de la iglesia. El estacionamiento de San Damián está reservado para las personas mayores y personas con permisos de

estacionamiento de incapacidad. Todas las demás plazas de estacionamiento de desventaja deben ser reservadas para aquellos con permisos, incluso detrás de la iglesia.
