eeds, o r " . . . u n w a n t e d plants that grow where they have not been inten­ tionally planted" (OKIGBO, 1978), are very harmful to crops in develo­ ping countries of the tropics. Farmers in these regions spend more of their time trying to control weeds than in any other part of the w o rld . Weed scientists, w ho focus their research on weeds and means of controlling them, are unfortunately not very pre­ sent in these regions.

M aintaining an

ecological balance

Most cropping systems developed in Sudano-Sahelian A fric a c u rre n tly aim at boosting production, often to the detriment of the natural ecologi­ cal balance. W eed c o n tro l is too o ften ju s t a d efensive o p e ra tio n , aimed at protecting crops and obtai­ ning a very general level of weed- control efficacy, i.e. crop-selective che m ica l and m echanical means. Instead, such control should involve rational operations to stall the deve­ lo p m e n t o f w e e d s based on f u ll knowledge of these species — in this way, the most suitable control tech­ niques could be chosen. However, weed infestation and behaviour are highly variable and still not clearly understood, and it is not always pos­ sible to maintain weeds below a nui­ sance threshold. Moreover, repeated use of herbicides can promote selec­

tion of unsusceptible species, which are soon able to compete w ith the crops. This is generally due to a lack o f k n o w le d g e o f the w eed flo r a : composition, species diversity, eco­ lo g y and b io lo g y . K n o w le d g e o f these characteristics and their evolu­ tions, as influenced by natural and phytotechnical factors, is an essential prerequisite for im p ro vin g control methods (BARRALIS & CHADOEUF, 1980; MAILLET, 1992).

The A d v e n t r o p D o c C D - R O M , developed by Grard et a i (1995) and the flora guide "Adventrop. Weeds of Sudano-Sahelian Africa" (LE BOUR­ GEOIS & MERLIER, 1995) highlight weed problems from a multidiscipli­ n a ry p e r s p e c tiv e . agents and researchers in identifying weeds, while providing them with a more detailed understanding of gro­ wing conditions and promoting bet­ ter control of invasive weeds and the agricultural environment.

These tw o in fo rm a tio n tools were developed on the basis of results of several years of study in cotton-gro- wing regions of northern Cameroon. This region was chosen for its high diversity and the fact that the eda- phic, climatic and agronomic condi­ tions are representative of single rainy season savanna regions throughout western and central Africa.

The Adventrop database describes and helps users identify 142 of the most important weeds encountered in c o tto n , m a iz e , s o rg h u m and groundnut cropfields. A b o u t 40 of these are very com m o n and often abundant weeds that can cause high crop losses (Figure 2). About 50 are common species that generally grow alongside the main weeds, but they are not yet considered dangerous (Figure 3). The remainder are restric­ ted to very specific environm ents and are less common. They are thus e x c e lle n t e c o lo g ic a l in d ic a to r s (Figure 4). Some are closely related, in botanical terms, to more important species from which they have to be differentiated (Figure 5).

For each species, the official name is given along w ith the most common synonyms. There is a complete bota­ nical description, w hich focuses on vegetative traits to enable identifica­ tion of incomplete samples. This is illustrated w ith a botanical plate of all of the plant's organs, covering the entire growth cycle from plantlet to seed, along with colour photographs of adult plants, plantlets and specific

in situ details. Each plant's beha­

concern the soil and climatic condi­ tions required for grow th, and the effects of different cropping systems on the e x te n t o f in fe s ta tio n . The phenological cycle is described with respect to the c ro p p in g calendar, w h i l e h ig h lig h t in g the effects of mechanical weeding.

A full glossary w ith colour illustra­ tions explains all of the specialized botanical, meteorological and agro­ nomic terms used in the descriptions (Figure 6).

an attractive

interactive system

A ll of the data is integrated in the m ultim edia Adventrop D oc system on CD-ROM. In contrast to traditio­ nal approaches, this highly educatio­ nal and fu lly illustrated interactive product provides easy and particu­ larly lively access to flora.

The C D -R O M in c lu d e s a species id e n tific a tio n m o d u le linked to a database. Weeds are identified gra­ phically by building a profile portrait of the plant (Figure 7). This method has several advantages:

- it only involves drawings, with no technical terminology;

- the user chooses w h ic h traits to describe;

- incomplete samples can be identi­ fied, as missing information is tolera­ ted;

- observation errors are also tolera­ ted.

At each step of the identification pro­ cess, a probability of resemblance is c a lc u la te d fo r each species. The most likely species are then listed in descending o rder of resemblance (Figure 8).

The user has access to the botanical plates, photographs and descriptive texts at all times, and they can also be printed (Figure 9). All technical terms are managed in hypertext with associative trails to illustrated defini­ tions in the glossary.

The user, when uncertain as to which trait to describe, can ask the program to choose the most pe rtinen t ones. W hen a species has been identified w ith a probability of less than 100%, the profile portrait highlights w h ic h tra its are in a d e q u a te ly d e s c rib e d (Figure 10).

No special computer skills are requi­ re d to use A d v e n t r o p D o c : an o n -scree n ico n bar gives the user access to all options, w h ic h can be selected by s im p ly c lic k in g on the chosen icon button.

Conclusion

and prospects

A d v e n tro p D o c, in c lu d in g a bo ok and C D -R O M in French, is a very c o m p le te package. The h a rd c o p y flora guide is easy to use in the field, and accessible to those w ho are not yet eq uipped w ith a co m p u te r and C D - R O M d r iv e . The in te ra c tiv e CD-ROM system is designed mainly for educational, research and d e v e lo p ­ m e nt institutes, and represents an e f f ic i e n t re search, e x te n s io n and training tool.

The information offered by this pac­ kage should help in developing ratio­ nal weed c ontrol practices that are adjusted to each specific situation. Indeed, users sh o u ld ga in a great de al o f k n o w l e d g e on th e m a jo r weeds and c o n d itio n s required for their growth. Some species are good indicators of the fertility or degrada­ tion status of the soil, the history of the plot and cropping systems. These so-called weeds could also become essential elements for understanding cropping systems: "plants for w h ich m an has n o t y e t f o u n d a u se " (ANDERSON, 1977).

This database w ill be progressively up date d w it h o th e r w e e d species from the same re gion. In a d d itio n , this research is of considerable inter­ est and s h o u ld be e x te n d e d i n to other regions of the world.

The multimedia Adventrop- Doc system on CD-ROM and the document "Adventrop. Les adventices d'Afrique soudano- s a h é lie nn e " (A d ven trop . W eeds of S o udano-S ahelian Africa) are two complementary tools for identifying crop weeds in western and central Africa. Together they repre­ sent a unique source of information in the field of tropical agriculture which is accessible to specialists and nonspecia­ lists for fie ld , la b o ra to ry , teaching and research use. 142 weeds that are found in fields of cotton, maize sorg­ hum and groundnut are described. This package focuses on vegetative traits to enable identification of incomplete samples. Details on the behaviour, biology, distribution and ecology of the plants are given. The AdventropDoc database on CD-ROM (for PC computers) includes a species identification module. Weeds can be identified from dra­ wings through a process involving trc - choices and error m a n a g e m e n t, w ithout a n y technical term in olog y with autocorrection. At any time, the user can gain access to and print botanical drawings, photographs and descriptions. This software pachage is distributed by CIRAD in French. Le système m ultimédia sur CD-ROM, Adventrop Doc, et l'ouvrage "Adventrop. Les adventices d'Afrique soudano- sa h é lie nn e " constituent de u x outils com plém entaires d'identification des m auvaises herbes des cultures en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre. Leur combinaison offre un m atériel unique en agriculture tropicale, accessible aux non spécialistes et aux praticiens dans toutes les situations : te rra in , la b o ra to ire , en s e ig n e m e n t et recherche. Les 14 2 adventices rencontrées dans les champs de cotonnier, de maïs, de sorgho et d'arachide sont décrites. L'accent est mis sur les caractères végétatifs afin de perm ettre la reconnaissance d'échantillons incomplets. Le compor­ te m e n t, la biologie, la répartition , l'écologie dans les régions soudano-sahéliennes et le cycle de développement sont détaillés. Le CD-ROM Adventrop Doc (pour micro­ ord in a te u r com patible IBM-PC) com prend un m odule d'identification des espèces couplé à la base de connais­ sance. Un portrait-robot de la plante est constitué selon un processus pe rm e tta n t le libre choix des caractères, la gestion des erreurs, l'absence de terminologie technique et l'autocorrection. A tout moment, il est possible d'accéder aux dessins botaniques, aux photographies et aux textes descriptifs et de les imprimer. L'ensemble du produit est diffusé par le CIRAD en français.

El sistema m ultim edia en CD-ROM Adventrop Doc y la obra "Adventrop. Las adventicias de Africa sudano-sahe- liana" constituyen dos herramientas complementarias de identificación de las malezas de los cultivos en Africa occi­ dental y central. La combinación de ambos soportes de información ofrece un material único en agricultura tropi­ cal, accesible a los no especialistas y los prácticos en todas las situaciones: terreno, laboratorio, enseñanza e investi­ gación. Se describen las 1 4 2 adventicias encontradas en los campos de algodón, maíz, sorgo y cacahuete. Esta pre­ sentación subraya los caracteres vegetativos para permitir el reconocimiento de muestras incompletas. También se detallan el comportamiento, la biologia, la distribución, la ecologia en las regiones sudano-sahelianas y el ciclo de desarrollo. El CD-ROM Adventrop (para computadoras per­ sonales compatibles IBM) incluye un módulo de identifica­ ción de las especies asociado a la base de conocimientos. La identificación se hace de manera gráfica mediante la constitución de un retrato-robot de la planta, según un pro­ ceso que permite la libre elección de caracteres, la gestión de errores, la ausencia de terminologia técnica y la corre- ción automática. En cualquier momento, es posible acceder a los dibujos botánicos, las fotografías y los textos descrip­ tivos e imprimirlos. El producto es difundido por el CIRAD en Francés.
