WHO EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN REGION to the

FIFTH MEETING OF THE TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUP FOR POLIOMYELITIS ERADICATION IN EGYPT

EMRO, Cairo, 15–16 December 2003

Your Excellency, Members of the Technical Advisory Group, Representatives of Partner Agencies, Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Fifth Meeting of the Technical Advisory Group for Poliomyelitis Eradication in Egypt. I would like to reiterate my gratitude to the TAG members for their continued guidance in the fight to eradicate poliomyelitis from Egypt and from the Region as a whole. I would also like to commend the strong commitment of H.E. Dr Tag El Din, Minister of Health and Population, and all the staff of the Ministry. This commitment, together with the support of the partners, particularly, UNICEF, USAID, CDC, Rotary International and WHO, is contributing to the progress Egypt is making towards the eradication goal.

Dear colleagues,

Although Egypt is still one of the six countries in the world with endemic polio transmission in 2003, significant progress has been made and interruption of transmission is at hand. A lot of improvements have been made as a result of implementation of the valuable recommendations made during the last four TAG meetings.

So far in 2003, with good surveillance, only one case was reported from Minia and there has been a reduction in isolation of the wild virus from the environment. This progress is attributed to the intens ification and improvement in the quality of campaigns, which are now carried out house to house throughout the country, with better supervision and involvement of volunteers from different government and nongovernmental sectors. I am also encouraged that the Ministry is taking the necessary steps to address all the observations made by the independent monitors and the evident improvement in achievements from one round to the next.

These improvements in quality, which were the main core of the recommendatio ns of the TAG in the previous four meetings, were possible only through the personal support of Dr Tag El Din and the new programme leadership. I am very pleased to note that finally there is transparency in reporting of cases, with a disappearance of the previously prevailing culture of fear, and that health officials and workers have realized that going house to house is a feasible task.

Dear Colleagues,

Despite the marked improvements there is still more to be done. The indigenous virus is still circulating in the environment. In fact this year the virus was mainly detected in Cairo and reappeared in Minia after a long period without virus circulation. After reappearance in Minia, the virus continued to be detected from both the environment and contacts for several months, which is another cause of great concern. All this indicates that there is no place for complacency or fatigue and that activities need to continue with even more vigilance. All children under 5 should be covered during supplementary immunization activities and any gaps in surveillance should be promptly addressed.

Dear Colleagues,

Once again I want to commend the hard work that is being done by the national staff and wish to assure them, on behalf of all partners, of our continued commitment to provide the necessary technical and financial support for polio eradication activities in Egypt.

In conclusion, I would like to thank TAG members for their commitment also and for taking the time from their busy schedules to attend this meeting. We all look forward to your valuable guidance and recommendations which I am sure will receive the full support of H.E. Dr Tag El Din as usual, for their implementation. With this advice and commitment of the government and partners I am sure we will soon celebrate a wonderful success.

All what remains for me is to wish you a pleasant stay in Cairo.
