ECA hosts high-level dialogue on scaling up statistical development

ECA Press Release No. 01/2008

Addis Ababa, 19 January 2008 (ECA) – The African Centre of Statistics (ACS) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is organizing the first meeting of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa) from 20 to 24 January 2008, at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The theme of this first meeting of StatCom-Africa is “Scaling up Statistical Development in Africa”.

The meeting will take stock of ongoing efforts in the field of statistics and will facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices by countries, sub-regional, regional, and international organizations, as well as development partners, in statistical development on the continent.

Key agenda items of the inaugural meeting of StatCom-Africa include the formal launching of the Statistical Commission and setting up of a strong bureau and various working groups according to priority needs in statistical development on the continent.

During the conference period, the African Centre of Statistics will also host an award ceremony on behalf of the African Statistical Community at which prizes will be awarded to five statisticians who have done outstanding work in statistics in Africa.

A pre-StatCom high-level seminar on leadership and management of national statistical systems is planned for 20 January.

The Forum on African Statistical Development (FASDEV) will be held on 24 January as a post-StatCom event.

For further information on the conference go to: http://www.uneca.org/statistics/statcom2008/default.htm Background

Since its inception, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) has established a number of subsidiary bodies as part of its intergovernmental machinery to efficiently serve its member states in different sectors, StatCom-Africa is the ECA's subsidiary body in charge of its statistics subprogramme (Subprogramme 9).

Following the last ECA repositioning exercise in August 2006, the statistics division was re-established under the rubric of the African Centre for Statistics (ACS) . It was therefore imperative to put in place a new subsidiary body specifically devoted to statistics and statistical development on the continent. The last meeting of ECA Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, held in Addis Ababa from 2 to 3 April 2007, endorsed the creation of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa) as the new subsidiary body in charge of statistics. StatCom-Africa, is expected to provide a forum for discussions and decisions on all aspects related to statistical development, which are of interest to its members within the framework of the policies and procedures of the United Nations and subject to the general supervision of the Conference of Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.

Good statistics allow governments to effectively assess a nation's human and natural resource and set coherent and attainable objectives. The absence of reliable, up-to-date statistical information in many African countries currently limits the application of practical development strategies on the continent.
