ERRATUM

The following proposition corrects the part of the proof of Proposition 5.7 of the article O. Debarre, R. Fahlaoui, Abelian Varieties InWdr(C) And Points Of Bounded Degrees On Algebraic Curves, Comp. Math. 88(1993), 235–249,

which is incomplete (to wit the case d= 4).

Proposition.— Assume d = 4 and C general in |L|. Then C has no g41.

Proof. LetAbe a base-point-freegδ1onC, withδ≤4. Following [DF] (5.12), one constructs a rank 2 vector bundle T on S that fits into an exact sequence

(∗) 0→H0(A)⊗ OS →T → OC(C−A)→0 .

Note that H2(T) = 0 and χ(T) = 10−δ by Riemann–Roch. If h =h0(T)>6, the kernel of the map∧2H0(T)→H0(∧2T)'H0(S, C)'C10 meets the (2h−3)-dimensional set of decomposable vectors off the origin. One proceeds as in [DF] (where the numbers at the top of page 246 are all wrong) to show that there exists a divisor D onS that fits into an exact sequence

0→ OS(D)→T → IZ(C−D)→0 ,

where Z is a finite subscheme of S; moreover, either D ∼ 2H or D ∼ 3H −F. Then, h0(T)≤h0(D) +h0(C−D) = 5, which is a contradiction (this remark avoids the lengthy proof in [DF]).

It follows that h0(T) = 6, h1(T) = 0 and δ = 4. Assume first that there is a non-zero morphism u : T → T ⊗ωS. We argue as in [L]: since H0S2) = 0, the morphism ∧2u vanishes henceu drops rank everywhere. ThenN = (Imu)∗∗ is a line bundle onS which is a subsheaf ofT⊗ωS; there is a morphismT →N which is surjective off a finite subset ofS.

Note that by Riemann–Roch, one has h0(OC(C−A))≥5>2 =h1(H0(A)⊗ OS), hence the exact sequence (∗) shows that T is generated by global sections off a finite subset ofS, hence so isN. It follows that either h0(S, N)≥2, or N ' OS; but the latter cannot occur since Hom(T,OS) = 0. Tensoring (∗) byωS⊗N, we see thatH0(T⊗ωS⊗N)6= 0 implies H0C ⊗N⊗ OC(−A)) 6= 0 and in particular (5H −F)·(3H −N) ≥ 4. Furthermore, there is an exact sequence

0→N →T ⊗ωS → IZ⊗2S ⊗N(C))→0 ,

which implies N ·(H+F −N)≤c2(T ⊗ωS) = 0. A case-by-case analysis shows that the only possibility isN ∼2H; but thenH0C⊗N(−A))6= 0 implies A≡Hx, which is not a pencil.

Hence Hom(T, T ⊗ωS) vanishes, and so does H2(EndT) by duality. Dualizing (∗) yields 0→T →H0(A)⊗ OS → OC(A)→0 .

Tensoring by T, we getH1(T ⊗A) = 0. We now follow another construction of [L], where a moduli spaceP is constructed which parametrizes triples (C, A, l), whereC is a smooth

curve in |L|, A is a base-point-free g14 onC, and l is a surjective morphism H⊗COS →A which induces an isomorphism on global sections, two such morphisms being identified if they differ by multiplication by a non-zero scalar. Let π : P → |L| be the forgetful morphism. The tangent space to P at (C, A, l) is identified with the kernel ˜H0(T ⊗A) of the map H0(T ⊗A)→H1(EndT)−→Tr H1(OS); the tangent space to|L| atC is identified with the kernel ˜H0(C, L) of the map H0(C, L) → H1(OS). There is an exact sequence ([L], page 304)

where µ : H0(A) ⊗H0C ⊗A) → H0C) is the Petri map. By the base-point-free pencil trick, its kernel is isomorphic to H0C ⊗(A⊗2)), which has by Riemann–Roch dimension at least h0(A⊗2)−2>0. SinceH1(T ⊗A) vanishes, T(C,A,l)π is not surjective, hence neither is π by generic smoothness. This shows that there is no g41 on a generic C in |L|, and finishes the proof of the proposition.
