Multilingualism and Conceptual Modelling

One of the leading motivations behind the multilingual semantic web is to makeresourcesaccessibledigitallyinanonlineglobalmultilingualcontext. Con- sequently,itisfundamentalforknowledgebasestofindawaytomanagemultilin- gualism and thus be equipped with those procedures for its conceptual modelling.

Inthiscontext,thegoalofthispaperistodiscusshowcommon-senseknowledge andculturalknowledgearemodelledinamultilingualframework. Moreparticu- larly,multilingualismandconceptualmodellingaredealtwithfromtheperspective ofFunGramKB,alexico-conceptualknowledge basefornaturallanguageunder- standing. This project argues for a cleardivision betweenthe linguisticand the conceptualdimensionsofknowledge. Whiletheconceptuallayerisorganizedinto threemodules,whichresultfromastrongcommitmenttowardscapturingsemantic knowledge(Ontology),proceduralknowledge(Cognicon)andepisodicknowledge (Onomasticon),thelinguisticlevelincludesalexiconandagrammaticon (asyn- tacticrepository ofconstructionalschemata). Culturalmismatches arediscussed andformallyrepresented atboth theconceptualandthe linguisticlevelsofFun- GramKB.
