PREFACE

Thfs d r a w i n g c h e c k l i s t is the t h i r d of the serles, complementing t h e Ruilding Practice Note 29, Building Drawings C h e c k l i s t : Architectnral Drawings, and Note 3 9 , Building Drawings C h e c k l i s t : Structural Drawings

for Housing. It p r o v i d e s mechanical engineers w i t h a convenient t o o l f o r the final review of drawhgs prepared under their supervision.

S i n c e t h i s l i s t is a general one, ft cannot cover a l l the s p e c i a l siruatfons which can occur in practice; nevertheless it should prove h e l p f u l as a basic g u i d e . Users of t h i s checklist ate strongly urged, before putting it to use, to consult the Canadian National Standard CAN 3-B 78,H77 Ruilding Drawings (published by and available from t h e

Canadian Standards As s o c i a t i o n , 178 Rexdale Blud.

Part I of thXs checklist, which is presented in narrative form, serves as a reminder of various <terns to t h e person check in^ t h e

structural drawings. The matter of "crispness of drawing", far example, cannot be ov.eremphasized, particularly in p l a n s drawn at 1: 100 scale.

Part 11 presents, f n tabulated form, a checklist sheet for every sheet in a traditional set of working drawings. These t a b l e s can b e photocopied and attached to the appropriate drawings during the checking

stage. Free space is provided an the sheets for additional item. Using the tables w i l l thus simplkfy t h e psomss of reprihting check sets a n d / o r establishing p e m n e n t recurds of all verffications and a p p r o v a l s . They

can a l s o supplement computer-aided design (CAD) software.

The engineer must c r i t i c a l l y review his own work b e f o r e r e l e a s i n g it to a contractor f a r emcation, It is his p r o f e s s i o n a l r e s p a n s f b i l i t y , an obligation to h i s c l i e n t and t h e key to a good business reputation.

1. CWCKING DIMKNSIOWS AND UNITS

The dimensioning method should be consistent, meticufous and in accordance with the National Standards of Canada CAN 3-B 78.3-M77

Building Drawings.

1.1 Linear dfmensions should be expressed in dllimetres (mm) on building drawfnm, and in metres (m) on s i t e p l a n s . According to the standard convention in draf tiag, the unit symbol can be omltted if t h e f o l l m i n g requirements are m e t :

a) a note indicating the unit used is displayed In a conspicuous p l a c e on t h e drawing sheet;

b) a l l linear dimensions including those for spot: l e v e l s and l a n d elevation are given in one dimensioning unit only*

For easier reading, group the d i g i t s in triads on both s i d e s of t h e d e c i - 1 marker ( e . g . , 123 456 7 8 9 ) . All dimensions shmn in metres m s t be taken t o three decimal places, even when a l l decimals are zeros ( c . g.

3. SITE PLAN

3.10 It is a common practice to cover conditions of site development

work by a set of general notes placed on the site plan drawing sheet. These notes could include iaformatfon concerning materials used, special work processes to be employed and notification on

approvals required for various mechanical services.

5.13 Show horizontal heat inglair conditioning ducts and v e r t i c a l risers. Note dimensions, material, insulation where required, fire daglp ers and access panels of ducts. Show drains for A/C units.

7. DETAILS

7.1 As mentioned in 3.17, d e t a i l s concerning site development should,

for the sake of convenience of handling the drawings, be placed on the same sheet as the site plan. Other d e t a i l s pertaining to i n d i v i d u a l floor and roof plans should be located, wherever p o s s i b l e , on the plan to which they p e r t a i n .

7.2 Detailed mechanical room plan: show general arrangement of

equipment; check clearances for servicing, access, tube w i t h d r a w a l and equipment replacement. Provide space ventilation, combust5on a i r , drainage and curbs at doors. Ensure freeze p r o t e c t i o n of c o i l s and piping against outside air.

7,3 Check that all symbols used are shown in legend.
