Millennium Manitoba Opportunities Grant

Jurisdiction: Manitoba Contact: Ian Pratt

Level: Post Secondary Theme: Government and board policies

Description of Practice:

Under the new program, Millennium Manitoba Opportunities Grant, independent Aboriginal students are eligible to receive 100% of their tuition costs (to a maximum

$4,000) in non-repayable assistance.

Background:

Manitoba Student Aid identified a need for funding for independent Aboriginal students in post-secondary education as they generally do not qualify for the Canada Access grant for dependent students from low income families. As a result, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation (CMSF) and Manitoba entered into an agreement on March 17, 2006 that will direct $4.4M towards a program for low-income dependent students and first year independent Aboriginal students. This program is called the “Millennium Manitoba Opportunities Grant”.

Development:

It was recognized that most Aboriginal students in post-secondary education (PSE) were considered independent of their parents (for financial contribution to their PSE) by Manitoba Student Aid. Consequently, these students would not be eligible for programs directed to dependent students. A separate component was developed in order for Aboriginal students benefit from this program.

Evidence:

It is estimated in the first year of this program that 300 students will be eligible for the Aboriginal component of the Millennium Manitoba Opportunities Grant.

Adaptability

As this program has yet to be implemented there is no information on this.
