FINANCING OF THE AFRICAN INSTITUTEPOR\~~IC DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING

By resolution 72

(V),

the Economic Commission for Africa decided

"that the counterpart funds for the first five years of the institute will be paid up to a total of SUS 1.5. million by those African' member States of the Commission listed in the table given below according to the following methods,

"(a) The payment of a fixed minimum contribution by all the governments of countries listed in the table given below amounting to SUS 25,000,

"(b) An additional payment varying accorg.ing to the population of each country, SO as to bring the total contribution of each government up to the following amount:

- Countries with less than 1,500,000 inhabitants

" wi th 1.5 to 8 million inhabitants

" wi th 8 to 16 million inhabitants

" "Wi th mOre than 16 million inhabitents:

By letter dated 29 March 1963, the Executive Secretary brought this resolution to the attention of all governments mentioned above. Up to

the present, the governments of oighteen oountries have notified the Exeoutive Secretary of their pledges which amount to a total of $US 723,900. The amount pledged by each government is payable in five instalments. Four governments have paid their first instalment amount- ing to a total of $US 48,400. Following is the status of the pledges as of 15 February 1964:

On the recommendation of the Managing Director of the Special Fund, the Governing Counoil of the Special Fund on the understanding that governments would pledge a total of $1,500,000 towards the cash counter- part costs of the project, approved the request for the financing of

the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning, and decided to earmark an amount of ~US 3,561,700 for this project. The proposed

phasing of expenditure is as follows:
