Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to show that the generalized Schr¨odinger operator AV f = 1 2∆f + b∇f − V f , f ∈ C ∞ 0 (R d ), is a pre-generator for which we can prove its L∞

Rd, dx-uniqueness. Moreover, we prove the L1

(Rd

, dx)-uniqueness of weak solutions for the Fokker-Planck equation associated with this pre-generator.

Key Words: C0-semigroups; L∞-uniqueness; generalized Schr¨odinger

opera-tors; Fokker-Planck equation.

Preliminaries

Let E be a Polish space equipped with a finite measure µ on its Borel σ-field B. It is well known that, for a C0-semigroup {T (t)}t≥0 on L1(E, dµ),

its adjoint semigroup {T∗(t)}

t≥0 is no longer strongly continuous on the dual

topological space L∞(E, dµ) of L1(E, dµ) with respect to the strong dual

topol-ogy of L∞(E, dµ). In [10] Wu and Zhang introduce on L(E, dµ) the

topol-ogy of uniform convergence on compact subsets of (L1(E, dµ), k . k

1), denoted

by C(L∞, L1), for which the usual semigroups in the literature becomes C 0

-semigroups. If {T (t)}t≥0is a C0-semigroup on L1(E, µ) with generator L, then

{T∗(t)}

t≥0 is a C0-semigroup on L

(E, dµ), C L, L1 with generator L.

Moreover, on can proove that L∞(E, dµ), C L, L1

is complete and that the topological dual of L∞(E, dµ), C L, L1 is L1(E, dµ), k . k

1.

Let A : D −→ L∞(E, dµ) be a linear operator with its domain D dense in

L∞(E, dµ), C L, L1. A is said to be a pre-generator in L(E, dµ), C L, L1,

if there exists some C0-semigroup on L∞(E, dµ), C L∞, L1 such that its

gen-erator L extends A. We say that A is an essential gengen-erator in L∞(E, dµ), C L, L1

(or L∞(E, dµ), C L, L1-unique), if A is closable and its closure A with

re-spect to C L∞, L1 is the generator of some C

0-semigroup on L∞(E, dµ), C L∞, L1.

This uniqueness notion was studied in Arendt [1], Eberle [3], Djellout [2], R¨ockner[6], Wu [8] and [9] and others in the Banach spaces setting and Wu and Zhang [10] and Lemle [4] in the case of locally convex spaces.

L

-uniqueness of generalized Schr¨

odinger

op-erators

In this note we consider the generalized Schr¨odinger operator AVf := 1 2∆f + b∇f − V f , ∀f ∈ C ∞ 0 (R d ) (1) where b : Rd

→ Rd is a measurable and locally bounded vector field and

V : Rd

→ R is a locally bounded potential. In the case where V = 0, the essential self-adjointness of A :=12∆ + b∇ has been completely charaterized in the works of Wielens [7] and Liskevitch [5]. L1-uniqueness of this operator

has been introduced and studied by Wu [9], its Lp-uniqueness has been studied

by Eberle [3] and Djellout [2] for p ∈ [1, ∞) and by Wu and Zhang [10] for p = ∞.

Our purpose is to find some sufficient condition to assure the L∞

(Rd,

dx)-uniqueness of (AV, C

0 (Rd)) with respect to the topology C(L∞, L1) in the

case where V ≥ 0.

At first, we must remark that the generalized Schr¨odinger operator (AV, C∞ 0 (Rd))

is a pre-generator on L∞(Rd, dx). Indeed, if we consider the Feynman-Kac

semi-groupPV t t≥0given by PV t f(x) := E x1 [t<τe]f(Xt)e − t R 0 V(Xs) ds (2) where (Xt)0≤t<τe is the diffusion generated by A and τe is the explosion time, then by [10, Theorem 1.4] it follows thatPV

t

t≥0is a C0-semigroup on L ∞

(Rd, dx)

with respect to the topology C(L∞, L1). By Ito’s formula on can prove that

f belongs to the domain of the generator LV

(∞) of C0-semigroup PtV

t≥0on

(L∞(Rd, dx), C(L, L1)).

The main result of this note is

Theorem 2.1. Suppose that there is some mesurable locally bounded function β: R+→ R such that

b(x)x

|x| ≥ β(|x|) , ∀x ∈ R

d

, x6= 0. (3) Let ˜β(r) = β(r) +d−12r . If the one-dimensional diffusion operator

(4)

is L∞(0, ∞; dx)-unique, then AV, C

0 (Rd) is L∞(Rd, dx)-unique.

Moreover, for any f ∈ L1(Rd, dx) the Fokker-Planck equation

∂tu(t, x) = 12∆u(t, x) − (div b + V ) u(t, x)

u(0, x) = f (x) (5) has one L1(Rd, dx)-unique weak solution given by u(t, x) = PV

t f(x).
