wood analysis "Groteske III"
Dear Mr. Polo,
LAND- ENBOSBOUWECONOMIE ÉCONOMIEAGRICOLEETFORESTIÈRE
Robert C. Polo
Rue du Lombard 47
1000 Bruxelles
Herewith we send you the report on the wood analysis of the statue
“Groteske III” (statue by Oskar Schleimer, wood, ivory and metal, height:
57 cm) that you consigned to the laboratory for wood biology for identification on January 28th 2008.
The statue has been examined macroscopically and a small fragment has been taken from the base permitting the production of a thin longitudinal tangential section. The wood is reddish brown and has a uniform
structure without fissures. The polished surfaces of the statue made the observation possible of the vessels and the aliform parenchyma. The thin section showed the wood rays that are two to three cells wide.
The microscopic examination of the anatomical features and the
comparison with scientific reference material made clear that the wood is probably from the botanical genus Afzelia. Timber of Afzelia was known in Europe in the beginning of the twentieth century, but to our knowledge it was only sporadically used.
We hope that this analysis is useful to you.
Yours sincerely,
Dr.ir. Hans Beeckman, senior scientist and curator of the Xylarium Laboratory for Wood Biology and Xylarium
