3. Suppose that p(t) is an eigenvector, so that ϕ(p(t)) = cp(t). Note that ϕ(p(t)) = p0(t) +3p00(t) is a polynomial of degree less than the de- gree of p(t), so it can be proportional to p(t) only if it is equal to zero.

Thus, the only eigenvalue is zero. Also, if p0(t) +3p00(t) =0, we see that (p(t) +3p0(t))0 =0, sop(t) +3p0(t) is a constant polynomial. Since3p0(t) is of degree less than the degree of p(t), this means that p(t) must be a constant polynomial itself, or else its leading term will not cancel. Thus, ϕ has only one eigenvector, so does not admit a basis of eigenvectors, and therefore there is no basis ofVrelative to which the matrix ofϕ is diagonal.

4. Let a1, . . . , am be columns of A. Since rk(A) = 1, there is at least one nonzero column. Assume that al 6= 0. For every k 6= l, the column ak has to be linearly dependent with al because the rank of our matrix is 1: xkak+ ykal = 0. Since al 6= 0, we have xk 6= 0 (other- wise xk = yk = 0, and we don’t have a nontrivial linear combination).

Thus, ak is proportional to al, ak = zkal, zk = −yk/xk. Denoting B= al, C= (z1, z2, . . . , zl−1, 1, zl+1, . . . , zm), we get A=BC.

5. We have rk(β◦α) 6 rk(β) because clearly we have an inclusion of subspaces Im(β◦α)⊂Im(β): every vector of the formβ(α(u))withu∈U is automatically a vector of the form β(v) with v ∈ V.
