Welcome to the ISP internet presentation

The comprehensive research unit “Infectious Diseases and Public Health” (Infectiologie et Santé Publique – ISP) is dedicated to the research on major infectious diseases in veterinary and human health. ISP is a Joint Research Unit (JRU) affiliated with the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and

the University François-Rabelais of Tours (UFRT). The UFRT and INRA laboratories are located on University Campus sites and at the INRA Centre Val de Loire in Nouzilly, respectively. Nouzilly is located 25 km from Tours and can be reached by INRA bus shuttle services free of charge.

The JRU ISP comprises 14 research teams that are grouped into three thematic divisions according to the infectious diseases studied being caused by bacteria, parasites or viruses in:

 humans at the UFRT;

 livestock species at the INRA Centre Val de Loire;

The JRU ISP also includes the following core / facilities: flow cytometry, histology and imaging facilities, the International center for microbial resources dedicated to pathogenic bacteria and a research team in chemistry.

We provide practical trainings for Master’s and PhD students, and we welcome and support postdoctoral researchers striving to develop a career as independent researchers.

In close proximity to the JRU ISP at the INRA Centre Val de Loire, the Platform for Experimental Infections (PFIE) provides state-of-the-art high containment (BSL3) animal experimental facilities for infection experiments with:

 farm animals: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, equids, and poultry;

 laboratory animals.

The experiments can be only performed following approval by the local ethics committee (CEEA VdL).

Together the JRU ISP and the PFIE form a closely collaborating research infrastructure dedicated to animal infectious and zoonotic diseases that is unique in France.

The “Surgery and Imaging for Research and Education (SIRE”) platform provides further unique experimental facility at the INRA Centre Val de Loire. This platform permits to perform surgery accompanied by high-end imaging (CT scan and NMR) on small ruminants or pigs under conditions similar to those available in hospitals.

The JRU ISP coordinates the VetBioNet research infrastructure project (2017-22) that is financed by the European H2020 funding framework and involves 30 international partner organisations.

Do not hesitate to contact the JRU ISP team leaders and/or researchers to obtain further information about training opportunities and our portfolio of researches. We are looking forward to your request –See you in Tours / A bientôt

How to apply

The inquiry for training opportunities in our JRU is on your own initiative.

The availability of PhD projects is announced on the internet presentation of the Doctoral School "Health, Biological Sciences and Life Chemistry", section B " Infectiology and vaccinology, Immunology".

For the realisation of a Master's degree practical training you are advised to send your request three to six months ahead of the envisaged start of the training. This will enable the necessary administrative preparations.

To apply, you may directly contact the leader of the team in which you wish to integrate. Contact details are given in the research header of the ISP website. Alternatively, you may to send your request via the contact link, recipient "Human resources".

Please note that to permit the realisation of your training, a tripartite agreement has to be signed between INRA, the academic institution and yourself.

Master's degree

We are currently involved in two different Master's degree programmes:

 The French Master's degree "Cellular and Molecular Infectiology, Vaccinology and Therapeutic Antibodies (ICMVAT)" at the University of Tours.

 The Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree "International Master of Sciences in Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH)" (PDF) involving three core partners: University of Tours/INRA, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona/CReSA and University of Edinburgh/Roslin Institute. The associated partners of the IDOH programme comprise 34 partners: academic and public research institutions and industrial partners.

In France, Master 1 students receive no payment during their practical training if the internship lasts less than 8 weeks. However, Master 2 students receive a 554,40 € allowance per month. No bench fees will be requested for the realisation of the practical trainings.

Students interested in the IDOH Master's degree programme are encouraged to apply for a scholarship from the European Commission. This scholarship covers participation costs, travel fees and monthly subsistence allowance for the 2 years duration of the master programme.

PhD

A number of stipends for PhD students are financed totally by the Région Centre, by both INRA and the Région Centre, or by the University of Tours. These stipends are validated each year by the Doctoral School "Health, Biological Sciences and Life Chemistry", section B "Infectiology and vaccinology, Immunology" . They relate to a 3-years research project being proposed by an ISP researcher and selected by the Doctoral School's Scientific Committee. The availability of a PhD project is generally announced by the Doctoral School in February/March to start in October. To apply, you should directly contact the designated thesis supervisor. The thesis supervisor will usually select three candidates to present their previous works and the proposed PhD project in front of jury delegates from the Doctoral School. The jury will then select the candidate for the PhD project.

For PhD projects that are funded by other research grants, the thesis supervisor may select the student candidate on his own; nevertheless the PhD student will be integrated in the curriculum of the Doctoral School "Health, Biological Sciences and Life Chemistry". The latter also applies to students with stipends from international academic exchange organisations. The student may start his/her thesis anytime in the year.

Students' life: PhD students are totally involved in the research and day-to-day activities of their hosting laboratory. Next to the design and the performing of experiments, the writing of thesis reports and scientific papers, they also take part in various other activities: contract deal, technical work groups, journal clubs, PhD day presentations, ISP seminar series, international congresses, etc. Students are also represented in the different administrative and scientific committees at the INRA Centre Val de Loire.

It is mandatory that the thesis is supervised by a principal investigator with an "HDR" degree, e.g. a postdoctoral research qualification. Today about 30 scientists are holding this degree in our JRU. All PhD students are enrolled in the Doctoral School "Health, biological sciences and life chemistry" that is associated to the Universities of Tours and Orléans.

A thesis committee consisting of minimum three scientists (ISP and/or external researchers) reviews and validates the student's research project and the technical approaches for its realisation. This committee meets once at the end of every year for the two first years of thesis.

Trainings are proposed by INRA and the Doctoral School during the course of the thesis, to facilitate the integration of the students into the professional world at the end of their PhD.

Postdoctoral researchers

Following the completion of their PhD, postdoctoral researchers may apply for a fixed-term employment in our JRU.

The available postdoctoral positions are usually funded by research grants and have a contract duration of 1-2 years.

Postdoctoral researchers with a fellowship from international research organisations and being attracted by one of our teams' research agenda are invited to directly contact the respective team leader.

In some cases, young scientists and independent researchers with a proven record of competitive research wish to integrate in one of our teams. Consequently, they are strongly advised to consult the continuous project calls from the Agreenskills and Studium programmes, both of which are dedicated to promote international mobility.
