On account of the
persistant
fluctuations on thepig
market and of the statement of ourdeficit,
an
attempt
was made in thisstudy
to define moreaccurately,
on the onehand,
the mechanismaccording
to which theproducers respond
to theprices
and, on theother,
to compare the evolution of this behaviour with the structuralchanges
of the branchduring
theperiod
inquestion.
Themain results of the
analysis
were thefollowing :
- sales of
pigs during
one monthdepend
on theprices
of theprevious
18 months ;- decisions at the
beginning
of theperiod
may be correctedduring
the months close to the sales ;- sales are more sensitive to
prices
than theproduction itself ;
- -
contrarily
to awide-spread opinion,
structuralchanges
have led to an increased reaction of the farmers to theprices ;
- a stabilization cannot be
expected only
on the basis of modernized structures.Adjustment of the supply to the demand of pigs
and production structures
