SUMMARY
EFFECT OF FEEDING OF GROWING SOWS ON SEXUAL MATURITY AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCES : PRELIMINARY RESULTS
Two
experiments
were carried out in order to determine the effects of feed restriction as wellas
protein
andlysine
deficiencesduring
the whole orpart
of thegrowth period
upon the onset ofpuberty,
ovulation rate at the first oestrus andreproductive performances
at 30days
ofgesta-
tion(animals
mated at the firstoestrus).
The first
experiment
was made on 2groups of izLarge
While sowssubjected,
from a liveweight
of 55kg
and tillpuberty,
either to a liberalfeeding
level(maximum
intake :3 . 2 8 kg/day)
or to a restriction of about 45 p. 100 of the
previous
level.Underfeeding during growth delayed by
2 months the age of the sows atpuberty ( 3 6 3
versus 296days)
and reduced theirweight
atthis
stage.
Inaddition,
the ovulation rate of the restricted sows decreased( 12 . 0
versus13 .8)
with
repercussions
on the number of viableembryos
at 30days
ofgestation ( 9 . 0
versusiz. 5 ).
Themortality
ofembryos appeared
to behigher
in this group of sows restricted beforepuberty ( 2 6.o
versus 8.8 p.
100 ).
During
the secondexperiment,
three groups of 9sows werecompared
from z5kg
liveweight
and till
puberty.
The animals received,according
to a restrictionschedule,
either a diet at a low crudeprotein
level(r i. 5
p.ioo) supplemented
or not withlysine (total
content of the diets : group1: : 0.42 p. ioo ; group 2 : 0.62 p.
i oo)
or a diet with ahigh protein
content(crude protein
i !.5 p. 100,lysine :
o.86 p.103).
Crude
protein
restrictiondelayed
thegrowth
of the sows(group i), mainly during
the firstthree months.
L-lysine supplementation (group 2 ) improved
thedaily
meangain.
Thecomplemen- tary supply
ofprotein
hadonly
a favourable effect ongrowth during
the firstperiod (first
threemonths). Concerning
the age atpuberty,
nosignificant
difference was noticed between the groups(group
i : zg3days ;
group 2 : 254days ;
group 3 : zt9days).
Ascompared
to the other groups, theweight
atpuberty
of the sows from group Iwassignificantly
lower and this was also the casefor the ovulation rate
(group
r :9 .8 ;
group z : i2.! ; group 3 :r 3 .).
This decrease in the ovulation rate had aconsequential
effect on the litter size at 30days (group
i : 8.2 ; goup 2 : 9.! ; group 3 : "10.0).

RÉSUMÉ
Une étude a été
entreprise

gravides (lots
2, 3,4 ).
Les truies vides du lot ireçoivent
le mêmerégime
que celles du lot 3. Pendant la lactation, tous les animaux consomment,
à volonté,
un aliment à 16 p. ioo de

Parrapport
au lot carencé enlysine,
unesupplémentation
de 0,2p. 100en cet acide aminépermet d’augmenter
lepoids

à la naissance(lot
z :o, 9 8 kg ;
lot 3 : r,25kg),
sans pour autant en affecter le nombre
(lot
2 :8, 4 ;
lot 3 :8, 5 ).
net degestation (kg)
lot i : 30,7 ; lot 2 :25 ,8 ;
lot 3 : &dquo;2 8, 2 ).
Un
supplément plus important
delysine ( 0 , 4

gestation :
l’accumulation delysine
libredans le sang est
visible,
dès le tauxintermédiaire,
à 60jours
degestation,
mais nepeut
être mis en évidencequ’au
taux de o,62 p. rooaprès
90jours
degestation.
Compte
tenu des résultats del’étude,
le besoin enlysine
chez la truiegestante nullipare
estsupérieur
à 0,42 p. 103 durégime.
SUMMARY
LYSINE
REQUIREMENT
IN PREGNANT GILTSThe purpose of the
present study
was to determinerequirements
forlysine
inpregnant gilts.
Four groups of
6- 7 Large
Whitegilts including
one group of nonpregnant
animals werecompared during
onecycle
ofreproduction.
Theparameters
studied were thefollowing : weight gain
varia-tions, reproductive performances
as related todigestibility
andnitrogen
retention in late preg- nancy(8 0 days)
and variations in the blood concentrations of free amino acids. The basal dietduring gestation,
which contained 33 6 0
kcaldigestible
energy perkg dry
matter, 10.5 p. 100 crudeprotein
and 0.23 p. ioolysine,
was offered at a level of 2kg/day
and wassupplemented by
commercial
L-lysine,
at various levels(o,
0.2, 0.4 p. 103of thediet), respectively
for the 3 groaps ofpregnant gilts (groups
2, 3,4 ).
The control group(i)
received the sam3diet as that of groap 3.During
lactation all animals were fed ai libitum a dietcontaining
16 p. 10é>protein.
Addition of
lysine
to the basal dietduring gestation brought
about aweight gain
increaseof 39.7
kg
in group 2,4 t.8 kg
in group 3 and49 .8 kg
in group 4. Ascompared
to thelysine
defi-cient group, a 0.2p. roo
supplementation
with this amino acid led to increa33 of thepiglets
meanweight
at birth(group
2 :0 . 9 8 kg ;
group 3 : 1.25kg)
withoutaffecting
their number(group
2 :8.
4
group 3 :8. 5 ).
However, the realgrowth
of thepregnant gilts
remained lower than that of the nonpregnant
ones(gestation
netgain (kg) :
group i : 30.7 ; group 2 : 25.5. ; group 3 :z8.z).
A
higher lysine supplementation (o. d
p. roo of thediet)
resulted in a maternalgrowth
similarto that of the non
pregnant gilts (net gain
of group 4 : 33!7kg),
withoutimproving
thereproduc-
tive
performances
atfarrowing (number
ofpiglets :
7.5, meanweight
of thepiglets :
1.24kg)
Thenitrogen
retention recorded at the end ofgestation
washigher
in group q : r6.2 gN/day
versus8. 9 ,
9.6 and 9.4,
respectively,
in groups 1, 2 and 3.The unfavourable effect of
lysine deficiency during gestation
had also arepercussion
on theperformances
of thepiglets
atweaning (number
and meanweight (kg) :
group 2 : 7.5, 5.731 group 3 : 7.5, 7.z5 : group 4 : 7.3, 8-10.Finally,
thestudy
of the variations in the blood concentrations of free amino acids shows that there seems to be an evolution in therequirement during
the course ofgestation.
The accu-mulation of free
lysine
in the blood can be detectedalready
from the intermediatelevel,
at 60days
of
gestation,
but canonly
the determined at the level of 0.62 p. 100after 90days
ofgestation.
The results indicate that the
lysine requirement
in thepregnant gilt
exceeds o.42 p. 100of the diet.INFLUENCE

kg
depoids
vif. Les porcs femelles detype
« culardo (Piétrain
et LandraceBelge)
étaient
comparés
à des témoins LandraceFrançais.
Les animauxrecevaient,
àvolonté,
un ali-ment
apportant
300o kcal ou 3 300 kcald’énergie digestible/kg,
et4 8
ou 60 g deprotéines/i
ooo kcald’énergie digestible. Après
dissection du tractusgénital,
on mesurait etpesait
les deux cornes uté-rines et le
vagin.
Toutefois,
dans la race dePiétrain,
les aliments à teneur élevée enénergie digestible
tendent à retarder lapuberté,
et il est vraisemblable
qu’une
différenceplus grande
de consommation enénergie
aurait accentuéces tendances.
Le
poids
et lalongueur
de l’utérusaugmentent
avec la maturité croissante desovaires,
l’effet leplus
net étant observé au moment de lapuberté.
Parcontre,
lepoids
et lalongueur
duvagin
nesont pas modifiés.
