Buyer : Good morning, Madam.

Seller : Good morning, my daughter. What can I do for you?

Buyer : May I have a bunch of plantains, please?

Seller : A bunch of plantains costs 5000 francs.

Buyer : That’s most expensive! Could you accept 3000 Francs?.

Seller : No, don’t waste my time. It is the cheapest price. Okay give me 4000 Francs.

Buyer : Let me give you 3500 francs. That is all I can afford.

Seller : All right, because you are my costumer, give me 3650 francs. That’s my best price. It is a good bargain.

Buyer : Ok. Here is 5000 francs.

Seller : Thanks. Here is your change. Would you like something else?

Buyer : No thanks. Good bye!

Seller : Good bye!

Lesson: Bargaining prices at the market

Look at the following sentences what do they express?

- What can I do for you?

- May I have a bunch of plantains, please?

- Could you accept 3000 Francs?.

- Let me give you 3500 francs.

One way to make polite request or statements is to use a phrase or modal verb Example: Let me, please could you /can you, would you, will you, May I

After the phrase, you use the bare infinitive form of the verb (without “to”)

Example: Please can you show me that trousers? (Possibility) Will you transfer this money for me, please?

Let me have some tomatoes. (Suggestion); May I try this dress? (Permission)

SOME MEANS OF PAYMENT

In a shop, if you want to buy a good (for example a TV set), you can decide to pay in cash by giving the shopkeeper a bank notes or coins. You can also decide to pay by credit card. You insert your card in a

machine and you enter your PIN code. You can also pay in debit card or cheque. The shopkeeper will give you a receipt.

THE CHOICE OF CAREER Bello : Hello Djamila, how are you ?

Djamila : Fine, thank you. And how about you ?

Bello : I’m also fine, Djamila. We are in Première class. So we must choose our career now.

Djamila : You are quite right. Success in life depends on the right choice of career.

Bello : We must choose our career properly. May I know your choice of career?

Djamila : Yes, of course. I have decided to become a doctor. Do you like this profession?

Bello : Yes I do. It is a good profession. Could you tell me why you have chosen this profession?

Djamila : Most of our people are deprived of the service of the doctors.

Bello : Yes there are shortage of good doctors in our country. They people who live in the villages cannot consult a good doctor.

Djamila : I want to serve the people.

Bello : Are you willing to go to the villagers if necessary?

Djamila : Yes, of course. Through this profession I will be able to earn money honestly. Well, could you tell me about your choice of career?

Bello : Of course. I want to be an agriculture officer.

Djamila : Most students like to be doctor, Engineer or administrator. Why not you?

Bello : Our country is an agricultural country. Our economy depends on agriculture.

Djamila : Yes, it is right. Please tell me about your plan.

Bello : I will get myself admitted into an Agricultural University. After completing my education I will join the service of agriculture cadre. I will make research on agriculture.

Djamila : It’s a noble profession too.

Bello : I’ll teach the farmers about the modern method of cultivation.

Djamila : I appreciate your plan.

Bello : Choosing career is not enough. We must work hard to fulfill our plan.

Djamila : Of course. We must do well in the Probatoire Examination, otherwise we will not be able to become a doctor or an agriculture officer.

Bello : Of course .Thank you Djamila. It was really nice speaking to you.

Djamila : You’re welcome. Good bye. See you again.

Bello : Bye.
