Learning about Verb Tenses Simple Present and Simple Past

Present Tense: The verb shows action that happens regularly.

Ex: Every morning, Annie eats an apple.

Past Tense: The verb shows action that happened.

Ex: Yesterday, Annie watched TV.

Simple Present Form Simple Past Form

VERB + s/es in third person;

Ex: I eat an apple.

You eat an apple.

She eats an apple.

He eats an apple.

Annie eats an apple.

We eat an apple.

They eat an apple.

Ex: I watch TV.

You watch TV.

She watches TV.

He watches TV.

Annie watches TV.

We watch TV.

They watch TV.

(VERB + ed) or irregular verb*

Ex: I ate* an apple.

You ate* an apple.

She ate* an apple.

He ate* an apple.

Annie ate* an apple.

We ate* an apple.

They ate* an apple.

Ex: I watched TV.

You watched TV.

She watched TV.

He watched TV.

Annie watched TV.

We watched TV.

They watched TV.

* The simple past form ends in –ed for regular verbs. Most verbs are regular, but many common verbs have irregular past forms. See the reference list of irregular verbs.
