I N T R O D U C T I O N

SInce 1980, Connaissance des Temps is publishing ephemerides of the Sun, the Moon, the planets and the Galilean Satel

lites of Jupiter in form of tables of Chebyschev polynomials. F rom 1981, ephe merides of the Eight First Satellites of Saturn have been published under the same form in a Supplément à Ia Connaissance

des Tempsi These ephemerides have been

well received by the users; h e n c e , w e n o w intend to enlarge the publication to other natural satellites of the planets.

This year, we gather under the same title, in this booklet, the ephemerides of the Galilean Satellites of Jupiter,

the Eight First Satellites of Saturn and the five Satellites of Uranus. The repre sentation does not use any longer Chebyschev polynomials which require short

time intervals with respect to the sideral period of revolution of the satellite. It appears that a mixed form of representa tion, involving secular and period i c t e r m s and depending directly on the time, allows a sufficient accuracy and saves

the amount of numerical data to be publi shed. Furthermore, the use of these new tables is very easy.

Besides the tables, one will find in the present publication, various data con cerning the satellites of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.

Expl anations and use of the tables

The ephemerides provided below represent the differential coordinates of the satel lites with respect to the center of mass of the planet:

X = A a . c o s6 and Y = A6

where a is the right ascension, 6 the d e clination and Aa, A ô the separations b e t ween satellite and planet. The reference frame is the mean equator o^ ft* AoXc for the Galilean Satellites cf Jupiter and the mean equator 1950.0 for the satellites of Saturn and Uranus.

The theories which have been used for the construction of the ephemerides are: -Galilean S a t e l l i t e s : Sampson's theory

(1921) improved by Lieske (1977) and the constants introduced have been determined by Arlot (1982) .

- F i r s t Eight Satellites of Saturn: theory from Rapaport thesis (1977)

-Satellites of Uranus: t h e o r y f r o m V e i l l e t thesis (1983).

If most of the theories have been built with an internal precision better than O'.'Ol (ina geocentric reference frame) the observations which have been used to fit the constants provide an externalprecision for the computed positions which is actu ally not better than 0V05 or even 0 ” 5 for some satellites of Saturn. The accuracy governed by the choice of the mixed func tions of the time which have been retained to represent the ephemerides, have been determined in such a way that the diffe rence between the approximation and the source remains always below 0701 .

Our representation with mixed functions of the t i m e , m a k e s u s e o f t h e q u a s i - p e r i o d i c character of the variations for the diffe rential coordinates of the satellites. D e  tailed explanations about this represen tation are given in Chapront and Vu (1984). Let us now discuss how practically to com

pute the positions X and Y of the satellites.

-The ccefficients listed in the tables are denoted by:

A0, Al, B0, F0, Bl, Fl, B2, F2, CO, PO. For each time interval At, c o v e r i n g 2 d a y s in the case of Mimas up to 32 days in the case of the larger satellites of Uranus, one finds two sets of coefficients : one for X and the other one for Y . F o r e a c h coordinate at the time T (julian date) within the time interval {t0 ,t0+At}, the computed value is provided by the formula:

X )= AO + Al.t + BO sin(Nt+F0) + Bl.tsi

Y

where t= T-t<, ( t 0 is the time in julian date at the beginning of the interval ) and N is the frequency associated with the chosen satellite. The N are given at the top of each page of ephemeris. In general N is close to the natural frequencyof the satellite itself. Nevertheless, in thecase of Hyperion, N is close to the frequency of Titan because of the appearence of a large disturbing term whose frequency is

larger t h a n t h e proper frequencyof thesatellite The units of the data are: for A0, BÛ,

CQ the arcsecond; for Al, Bl the arcsecond per day and for B2 the arcsecond per d a y 2 . For the phases F0, Fl, F2, PO the unit is the radian. N is expressed in radian per day and t in days from the beginning of

the interval. Important note:

The representation of the ephemerides must be used only in its interval of definition i.e. T must belong to the interval {t0 #t0+At}.

Time-scales

Echelles de temps

The time argument of the ephemerides is TDB (barycentric dynamical time) which can be confounded with TDT (ter restrial dynamical t i m e ) . TDT is close to the former definition of ET (ephe- meris time) the use of w h i c h b e i n g n o t any longer recommanded by IAU. Practi cally TDT is obtained by direct measu rement of atomic time (TAI). So:

TDT= TAI + 32.184 s

The table below allows to convert TDT in the scale UTC (coordinate universal time) in which astronomical events are m e a s u r e d .

TDT = TAI + 32,184 s

-Example of calculation:

Let us compute the tangential coor dinates of Thetys (third satellite of Saturn) with respect to the planet for 1985, January 5, 23h 30min UTC.

In order to be brought in the time-scale T D B , which is the time variable of the ephemeris, one has to make a correction deduced from the table page 8. The cor rection equals 55s approximatly for 1985. The corresponding date is now January 5, 23h 30min 55s T D B .

The necessary coefficients are listed page 61 , they belong to the interval from January 1 to January 16 (the coefficients are valid for all dates in between January 1, Oh to January 16, 24h).

We read for X:

A0=0., A1=0., B0=38.4 152, Bl=0.06208, B2=0.0005l6, C0=0.0034

F0=0.941712 F1=0.1418

F2=1.7696

P0=5.0005

We then apply the formula: 0n form^ alors:

X = AO + Al.t + BO sin(Nt+F0) + Bl.t sin

where N=3.3280 radian per day which is the corresponding frequency for Thetys,

(cf. page 43). Note that phases F0, Fl, F2 and PO are in radians, t is the num ber of days elapsed between January 1 , Oh and January 5, 23h 30min 55s. Hence t=4.9798Q3 days. We finally get:

X = -37.62 arcseconds.

We correspondingly get for Y:

AO=-O.0012, A1=0., B0=15.0795, B1=0.

F0=2.615048 FI=2.

N and t have the same values than in

the case of X and we have Y = +4.99 arc seconds .

X and Y are evaluated in a tangential frame, Y towards the North and X towards the East.

Let us note that for some satellites (Titan, for example) some coefficients with systematically zero value are not listed.

02891, B2=0.000126, C0=0.0013

1487

F2=3.7565

P0=0.3986

Because of the c o m p l e x i t y o f themotion of the Galilean Satellites of Jupiter it is difficult to provide precise v a lues for nodes and perijoves. Indeed, eccentricities and inclinations are small (see the preceding table) and all these elements are submitted to large variations.

One gives below the mean longitudes (Sampson,1921) in the orbital planes, which are identified with Jupiter's equator.
