 Isotope = any forms of an element having the same protons numbers and similar chemical properties but differing in atomic weight (i.e. neutrons number)

 Isotope = same place in ancient greek (i.e. are in the same place of the periodic table)

Stable isotope trophic applications rely on 2 opposite

principles:

 Fractionation which explains isotopic change and

difference between food web components

 Mixing law which explains that the composition of

a consumer is primarily the weighted average of

the isotopic composition of its food sources
