“Historians in the News” acknowledges some of the many suc-cesses of historians in Canada, including their engagement outside academia and with the public. If you know of someone who has obtained employment in or outside of the academy, delivered a public lecture, given an interview, written an edi-torial or a notable blog entry, won a non-academic prize or a teaching award, or has been awarded an honorary degree, let us know! Here are a few developments that members have told us about over the past months:

Alberta) delivered the 2018 Donald Creighton Lecture. Her talk was entitled “Stitching the Global in an Age of Empires: Contact, Con-nection, and Translation in Needlework Arts, c. 1600-1880s.”

Brittany Luby (University of Guelph) received the Brian Long Best Doctoral Thesis in Canadian Studies for her dissertation, “Drowned: Anishinabek Economies and Resistance to Hydro-electric Development in the Winnipeg River Drainage Basin, 1873-1975.”

Colin Coates (York University) has been awarded the 2018 Inter-national Council of Canadian Studies Certificate of Merit for his contribution to the development of Canadian Studies. In addition to his scholarship, he is one of the founding members of the Cana-dian Studies Network and served as its president from 2010-2015.

Marcel Martel (York University) has been named Chair of the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program at the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Ben Bradley has won the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing and $2,500 in the annual historical writing competition of the British Columbia Historical Federation for his monograph British Columbia by the Road: Car Culture and the Making of a Modern Landscape (UBC Press, 2017). Lynne Marks (University of Victoria) received 2nd prize and $1,500 for her book Infidels and the Damn Church: Irreligion and Religion in Settler British Columbia.

Joan Sangster (Trent University) and Julia Smith (Rutgers University, have published an article entitled “#MeToo and lessons from the unfriendly skies,” in the Toronto Star (April 3, 2018).

recognizes the best book on women’s history in Ontario. Donald Smith (Professor Emeritus, Uni-versity of Calgary) delivered the keynote address at the June 2018 annual general meeting of the Ontario Historical Society. His talk focused on writer Paul Wallace, his book, The White Roots of Peace, and reconciliation in Ontario.

Veronica Strong-Boag was named a Member of the Order of Canada for her activism, for her prolific career as a historian and for her research that has made the history of women an integral part of the study of history in Canada. Awarded by the Ontario Historical Society, the Creighton Award recognizes the best biography or autobiography highlighting life in Ontario.

Paul-André Linteau (codirecteur du Labora-toire d’hisLabora-toire et de patrimoine de Montréal et professeur associé au Département d’his-toire de l’UQAM) recevra la distinction de Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec. Fondé en 1984, l’Ordre national du Québec est la plus prestigieuse reconnaissance décer-née par l’État québécois. Paul-André Linteau a été nommé membre de l’Ordre du Canada pour son éminente contribution scientifique qui a révolutionné les approches en histoire du Québec et du Canada, notamment en lien avec le passé urbain.
Paul-André Linteau (Co-Director of the Laboratoire d’histoire et de patrimoine de Montréal et Associate Professor in the His-tory Depart at UQAM) will receive the Distinction de Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec. Paul-André Linteau was named a Member of the Order of Canada for his distinguished scien-tific contributions that have revolutionized how the history of Quebec and Canada is approached, specifically with respect to urban history.
Robert Bothwell was named a Member of the Order of Canada for his influential research on Canadian history, politics and foreign policy affairs, notably in his authorship of numerous educational publications.
