14 Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management added another major Web resource to its already significant online presence. The virtual exhibit and online resource is entitled “African Nova Scotians in the Age of Slavery and Abolition.” The exhibit coincides with the United Nations’ designation of 2004 as the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle Against Slavery and Its Abolition. A stunning digital image of the 1783 “Book of Negroes” is one of the many highlights. Moreover, the website contains a database of more than 5000 African Nova Scotians, created from official records of African American refugees who settled in 1783 and 1815-16. It is available at www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/africanns.

Place-Names and Places of Nova Scotia

The Public Archives of Nova Scotia is pleased to announce a new online digitized print resource. With funding assistance from Industry Canada, the Archives has produced a fully digi-tized version of ‘Place-Names and Places of Nova Scotia’. This is the first time that the book has been published online in its entirety. The resource is available on the PANS C@P Site Web Site, http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/cap/places.

Published first in 1967, ‘Place-Names’ is still the best source available for basic, reliable and easily accessed information about Nova Scotia’s cities, towns and villages. Over 2400 communities appear in ‘Place-Names’, in alphabetical order and accompanied by a brief concise entry describing commu-nity highlights such as first settlement, first churches, first schools, primary industries, significant events and notable citizens.

‘Place-Names’ is an invaluable resource for a wide range of heritage interests–from genealogical research to environmen-tal studies to landmark dates for community development. The online version is fully searchable by community name or by county, and is accompanied by a selection of period post-cards taken from the Archives’ photographic holdings.
