MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

University

of Alberta

1. Dr. Greg Kealey, Past-President, introduced Dr. Irving Abella,President. 2. Dr. Abella delivered his Presidential Address.

3. Dr.Abellacalled the AnnualGeneral Meetingto order.

4. Moment of silencefor deceased members:Paul Bouchard, James K.Chapman, William Kaye Lamb andIvo Lambi. 5. Adoption ofthe Agenda.

6. Adoption of theminutes of 7 June 1999. 7. President's Report

Dr. Abella explained that the CHA constitution requires that the auditor be re-appointed. Heaskedfora motion to -re-appoint Kathy Greenlaw, CA. Moved. Seconded. Passed.

Dr. Abellareported thatthe CHA, in partnership with Chinook Multimedia, had received a large MillenniumFundgrant to create theCanadian History ElectronicResourceCentre, a gateway to historical material available ontheWeb.TheCHA hassubmitted a funding application to Historica for the sameproject; however, nodecision has beenmade. Dr. Abella thanked Dr.JoséIgartua forhishard workonthis file.

Dr. Abella explained thatthe CHA has increased its lobbying efforts. One crucialfile has beenaccess to post-1901 name- specific census material. Dr.Abella met withthe éditorialboardof the Globe and Mailand received a sympathetichearing and a supportive éditorial. In February, Dr. Abella and Council member Dr. BillWaiser presented a brief tothe Expert Panel on Access to Historical CensusAlaterials. The panel has completed itsreport and it is due to be released in the near future. As well, Dr. Abella and Dr. Waiser metwith the new National Archivist,IanWilson, to urgethat the English Report be implemented. Dr.Abella thanked Dr. Waiser for his hard work.

Turning to the future,Dr. Abella stated that the CHA Council has created two sub- committees. Oneis to studythe current and futuremandate ofthe CHA. Theother is to study the Journal ofthe Canadian HistoricalAssociationand itsfuture. Members of the CHAwill be kept abreast of therecommendations thatcorne out ofthese committees. Finally,Councilmember Dr. Peter Baskerville will be continuinghis membership drive. Please tell yourcolleagues to take outa membership!

Dr.Abella thankedDavid Mills, Claude Couture, RobynneHealey andthe entire programme committee for their workin making this year's programme so strong.

He thanked outgoingtreasurer Dr. Claude Beauregardfor his "unrelenting efforts to control the profligate tendencies of Council." Dr. Beauregard willbe very much missed.

Finally, Dr.AbellathankedJoanneMineault and MarielleCampeau, "the backbone of the Association."

Dr. Gerry Friesen apologized for the fact that the initial ballot contained errors which required the mailing ofa second ballot. Hethanked everyonefor their patience. In any event, the ballot is in effect his report.

10. Prizes

Dr. CynthiaNevilleannounced the prize winners. Thecomplétélistof prize winners is re-printed in this Bulletin. 11. Clio Awards

In the absence ofDr. Ian McKay,Dr. Neville presentedthe ClioAwards for Régional History. The complété list of Clio Award winnersis re-printed inthis Bulletin.

12. Hilda Neatby Prizes

Dr. Shirley Tillotson announced theHilda Neatby Prize winners. See the listof prize winners re-printed in this Bulletin. 13. Election Results

Dr.AbellaintroducedDr. Chad Gaffield. Dr. Gaffield spoke briefly about howhe looked forward tothe many challenges ahead. And hereminded Council members thatthere is ameeting tomorrowmorningat 8:00 am.
