Foreword

Injustover threedecades,“Computational modelingofmaterial formingprocesses” hasevolvedina tremendous and sometimesunexpectedway,frommeshescontainingafewdozenelementswithsimplematerialbehaviorslikerigid-plastic ones to millions ofdegrees of freedom simulations dealing withextremely complex constitutive models andcombining severalphysicsatdifferentscales.

TheseriesofinternationalconferencesICOMP–Internationalconference onCOmputationalmethods inManufacturing Processes–thatwassuccessivelyinitiallyheldinSaint-Étienne,France(2014),andtheninLiège,Belgium(2016),andwhich willtakeplaceinBarcelonanextSeptember2018,intendstocovertheevolutionofthisimportantscientificdomainandto presenthigh-levelscientificadvancesbothtotheacademiaandtheindustrialworld.

ThepresentthematicissueofComptesrendusMecanique witnessesthecontinuous evolutioninthisimportantscientific community.Itgathersthirteenpeer-reviewedcontributions,givinganoverviewoftheworksthathaverecentlybeencarried outinthisdomain.Thecoveredtopicsareindeedverybroad,includingmultiscaleandmultiphysics contributions,aswell assophisticatedanisotropic andasymmetricconstitutivemodels thatcan alsocontainadvanced kinematichardeningand coupleddamagemodels.Theseconstitutivemodelsaddressthecontinuumlevelaswellaspolycrystallineplasticity.Another trendinthesimulationofformingprocessesisthatcomputationsnolongerhavetobepurelydeterministic,butsome uncer-taintyquantificationcanalsobeconsidered.Thisrelativelynewpossibilityopensnewhorizonsforresearchinthedomain.

Thisthematic issuealsocontains contributionsto unconventionalformingprocesses,asfar asnumericalsimulationis concerned:drilling,blanking,asymmetric rolling,joiningbyplasticdeformation, bondinganddebondingprocesses, multi-fluidflows,laserforming,andcolddrawingofhigh-precisiontubesformedicaldevices.

Wedohopethatthisthematicissuebringstothereaders’knowledgenewpointsofview,abetterunderstandingofthe advancesinthisdomainand,beyondeverything,newideasforpotentialnewresearchprojects.
